advice on the better hard drive...

hey peeps

i need advice on the best option:

1. 2 x Samsung® SATA2 1TB 5400RPM 32MB HDD 3 year swop out warranty R579 each = R1158

or

2. 1 x Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB Serial ATA Hard Drive (SATA 3Gb/s, 7200.10, 32MB Cache) ~ New 3 year swop out warranty R999

Samsung is SLOWER but uses less power, maybe less prone to failure (slower) and if you have 1x 1TB - if one dies, your other one is still OK. Maybe make it a RAID-1 setup (mirrored RAID).

Seagate - bigger, faster but only 1.5TB vs 2TB - and it's one drive so if it dies - you've lost 1.5TB of data.

For performance only go with Seagate (1x). For data safety go with 2x Samsungs with RAID-1.

RAID 1 gives you only 1TB of storage.

I think you still need to add VAT to those prices... I saw these specials, but remember that on dealer specials the prices are quoted ex-VAT.
 
What are you using the hdd's for?

1. Data - Samsung is fine
2. System - Seagate (definitely!)

Yeah but it offers greater protection from mechanical failure of any single drive. If he buys the 1.5TB and it dies - he loses 1.5TB of data. If he has a RAID-1 with the Samsungs, and one drive dies, he loses nothing. If he uses the drives seperately - and one dies - he also only uses 1 out of 2 TB of data. Either way for safety- the Samsung (x2) is better than 1x Seagate of larger size.

He can make a RAID-1 or have two drives running separately. Seperately 2x 1TB is 2TB vs 1.5TB of Seagate. :)

It comes down to this: How much do you value the data you will be storing on these hdd's? If you lose the data can you get it back by leeching from your buddies?

If yes, then you don't need to go the RAID route.

If no, then get to know about RAID - fast!

i have 3TB of data already, so i would much rather back-up my own data than trying to piece it all together from buddies... so reading up on RAID rite now...

RAID-1 is when the OS sees both of your 1TB Samsungs as one drive but of 1TB only. The data is written to both drives at the same time. If one drive dies, the system notifies you and you can swap the defective drive for a new one, the data from the remaining drive is copied back and your stuff is protected from single drive mechanical failures.
RAID-0 both disks are written to and read from at the same time and the system sees them as one drive, the capacity of that drive is now the sum of the two single drives ie 2TB. If one drive crashes you will lose data on both drives since half the data is written to one drive, the other half to the other one - as in half the file is on one drive and the other half on the other.
This makes things faster but if one drive dies - you're sc-ewed.
