advice on the better hard drive...

i have 3TB of data already, so i would much rather back-up my own data than trying to piece it all together from buddies... so reading up on RAID rite now...

Note that RAID is not a backup solution. It protects from single drive mechanical failure. If you delete a file by mistake it will be lost in both RAID-0 drives and you'll lose it. If your PC is stolen or lightning hits it and burns it up - both drives will die. It's not a backup solution. To have backup, keep the data on a seperate drive, ideally in someone else's house. So if your house is flooded
and your stuff is lost, your buddy will still have your backup.

thanks for the info...interesting stuff... will keep in mind when i get my hdd's...
 
Seagate or Samsung are great.. How about Samsung's 1.5TB? It's about R100 cheaper than the Seagate.

HDD speed is determined by the amount of sectors that pass the heads, which is why a 7200 RPM drive is faster. However, sector density can also impact the rate at which sectors pass the heads.

Assume a 5400rpm 100GB 3.5" disk has 100 sectors on the outer (and longer track,), and on 10 on the inner track - each rotation on the outside will allow the heads to read 100 sectors, or 5400x100 per minute. If you increased the speed of the 100GB disk to 7200, then you would get 7200x100 and better performance.

Now assume you had a 5400rpm 1TB disk, and the sectors were denser (since the physical disk is the same size, the only way to increase capacity is to move the sectors closer to one another). The outer track is now 1000 sectors, which gives you a speed of 5400x1000 (sectors) per minute. This means that your slower rpm, but bigger, disk will offer a performance improvement over a faster rpm, smaller disk.

Of course, a 7200rpm 1TB disk will be faster than a 1TB 5400 disk....
