Living in George, my allergies are so bad!
Eyes are always red and irritated, sinuses are always flared up.

Just a pain, been to so many doctors and all of them say George is not the place for people like me with severe allergies, ( i'm not moving :D ). Medication has been fine-tuned... But a few have asked me if i have a decent air purifier in our room. This would help quite a bit.

Doing some searching i came across these three, that have good reviews and are decently priced.

Solenco CF8500 Air Purifier

GMC - Air Purifier - White - GMC280AP

Xiaomi Mi Air Purifer 3H

Xiaomi is good. Check the price of replacement filters, and how often they need to be replaced. I'd get this one.

GMC I've only heard of.

I bought the Solenco a few years back because it was cheaper and the replacement filters were cheaper and available in SA. It's good but it can't link to a phone and doesn't have the other features the Xiaomi does. The Solenco is very basic. The lights in front are extremely bright at night so if you like sleeping in total darkness you'll have a problem.

So the Xiaomo does the same job as the Solenco, but has smart features.

Seems their filters range from R600-R1000

Can vouch for the Xiaomi - I have a unit in my office and one in my bedroom - it works like a charm. They usually run specials on filters too, I got a lot when they were R500.

Should be good as long as it has a HEPA filter on it.

no Beurer?

It has an EPA/activated charcoal filter, not as good as the HEPA.

Coronavirus particles actually get filtered out/neutralised by a HEPA filter, according to research.

so far it seems everyone goes for the Xiaomi

Another thing, i see they are rated at 38w usage
My guess is, they'll still work fine on an inverter/battery system when load-shedding hits.

Not looking for a corana filter; something to take away the ****ing pollution from the cnuts next door and their diarrhea of baaing

The solenco looks like it has more filter features ( UVC etc), but the smart features of the xiaomi are nice.
The GMC model comes with a remote and has those filters and UVC etc.

Just phoned them, R385 for the filter, exl vat.GMC.PNG

Surely unless you keep your doors and windows permanently shut these things will do absolutely nothing?

And good luck surviving that in George in Jan...

I'm in between now.

The extra filters on the GMC do sound great ( with it's remote ) and then there's the Xiaomi

@djbrendan I'm looking for an air purifier, and came across this thread. Coincidentally, I'm between getting the GMC and Xiaomi. Which one did you end up getting, and how has it worked out for you?
