Air purifier experience and thoughts?

Please tell me, are they worthwhile, do they work, do they make a difference, and if so, what? We live on the West coast with dust/sand in summer and pollen in flower season.

We run one of these in each of our boys bedrooms, they are pricy compared to the likes of the Phillips 800 Series we have in our bedroom but they work very well, are easy to clean and the filters are not too badly priced...
