Advice/opinion

I have an option to trade my desktop i7 for an Acer 8920 with full spec. I get to keep my SSD and my 24" LCD though.

Does it sound like a good idea? I don't need a poweful desktop PC as I don't game at all. Being mobile does make sense although the 8920 is a beast of a machine. It does have warranty until 2012 as well which is a bonus.

T9300 processor
4GB ram
2 x 320GB HDD (will replace one with my SSD)
18.4" screen
9650Go GFX

And all the usual stuff laptops have.

That's not really a mobile machine, more of a desktop replacement. It's heavy and probably has very poor battery life. So keep that in mind. If you want a fast yet low power draw CPU a C2D ULV processor is what you need and 18.4 inches is huge for a laptop, rather keep an external display handy and you can even power 24 inches if you want.

Acer is also a brand I would avoid.

I hear what you're saying and when I say mobile all I mean is that it can be transported around much easier than a desktop. I don't need something that fits in my pocket or has amazing battery life although I've been assured that one has 1.5 to 2 hours when watching a movie.

Don't do it. If you work with computers, then you will ALWAYS have a need for a decent desktop. Rather get a cheap laptop; I saw a demo HP at Tarsus discounted from R12k to R4k....

Juggy bare in mind that laptop will not be that slow due to the ssd drive you have.

That drive will make that laptop very very fast, so i think you should go for it dude.

Mostly laptops are so slow because the hdd is slow.

So i did the swap and am pretty happy so far.

This thing is really nice, SSD in and pretty fast.

Windows 7 experience score is as follows...

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9300 @ 2.50GHz 6.1 5.2
Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB 6.1
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9650M GS 5.9
Gaming graphics 2303 MB Total available graphics memory 5.2
Primary hard disk 209GB Free (238GB Total) 7.3

Only thing I need is a backpack but can't seem to find one that is big enough.

The other half? Oh, you mean the live in maid;)

She doesn't care as long as I stop spending money on my pc and start buying tools so I can make things out of wood again.

I have a dog kennel, king size bed base and a book shelf on order from her already.

In best Borat voice/accent:

Yagshimash, she laaaik the woood?
