I gave my Q6700 cpu to my brother when I upgraded. Now he is ticked off because every time he starts Crysis 2, it is only a couple of minutes before his PC shuts down - he is running Crysis 2 on the lowest specs.

He has:

GIGABYTE GE-R460-V1 460W PSU
A-bit IP35 Pro
4GM Mushkin DDR2 Ram
Intel Q6700 with stock cooler
3 x SATA HDD's (80GB, 160GB, 250GB)
2 x DVD-RW drives
SoundBlaster live Soundcard.
2 x 120mm LED fans (case cooling)
ATI Radeon 4850 gfx card
2 x Screens

We had some difficulty fitting the cpu fan.

Could it either be the PSU, (too small for everything) or cpu fan?

Definitely power supply. Only buy Gigabyte if it's their GT range. The normal Odins are crap.

Wait "shuts down" or restarts?

PSU issues will cause it to simply reset, not shut down.

Quick is right though...psu is most likely followed by a temp issue.

Thanks Qwikslver, thought it might be the PSU.

What PSU and cpu cooler would you guys recommend? Need a good one at a good price.

Well his pc is now running with Crysis on lowest spec and 1 screen disabled.

Do you check the temps?

Are they within normal range? Also not to say you dumb or something, but did you use the thermal paste properly?

Sounds like you never clip the CPU fan properly/securely hence why it shuts down. If it was a PSU issue it would just trip/restart.

Had some trouble with the HSF, one of the clips keeps on flaring when trying to clip it in the mboard, but "gone in", I think, at the end.

What after market HSF would you recommend Synergy?

First make sure that the heatsink is properly installed. You'll notice very high temperatures with even a slightest of load on the CPU. Download like HWMonitorfrom CPUID to monitor the system temperatures.

I've made a mistake once to "tighten" the connectors of the heatsink in the direction of the arrows, which actually loosened it! So make sure that you haven't done the same.
Before you do that, make sure that you've applied a very very thin layer of thermal paste on the heatsink.

If you want a fairly decent CPU cooler, then go for something like the Coolermaster Hyper 212+ or Cocage True Spirit.

Thanks everyone.

I don't know the bios version, I'll have a look at that later today. I am using Artic Silver 5 and they said half a BB ball. I might have used a little bit more, but not more than 3/4 of a BB ball. Will that be a problem? It is a b!tch to get the freaking fan to clip in place. I am scared I'll break the Mboard, so hard it is to get it in.

Did you clean off the old paste & reapply new paste correctly?

My 4850 used to run very hot, 70C idle and about 80/90 under load.... tell him to get afterburner and coretemp and find out what his temps are first. Everyone should have these programs installed..

Did clean cpu & fan with alcohol about 3 times before it fit "OK", (fitting, removing, fitting , removing, fitting, removing, fitting). Not really keen to do it all over again.

BIOS version is 1.7.

I would try unplugging the DVDs and HDDs not being used, run 1 screen, unplug the cooling fans and take off the case cover - then try and run Crysis and see if it resets or shuts down - if it does, then it's probably the PSU taking too much strain. Alternatively, pop out the PSU and have it checked out.
If it needs replacing, I'd consider a decent Corsair TX650 PSU as a replacement.

It could be the HS/HSF fitting, although if you have done it a few times already, it should be fine, as long as it's seated properly and there is sufficient thermal paste.

He is playing Crysis on the lowest res, case open, extra hdds disconnected and only 1 screen atm.

Mmm. I recon the PSU needs upgrading then. Do you have access to another one to test.
Also let us know the CPU & GPU temps when available.
