I am forced to buy a new AGP 8X GFX card for my desktop. My XFX Geforce 6600GT decided to retire last week. Unfortunately I cannot upgrade to a higher spec system yet so at this stage I need to get a GFX card for under R1000 to see me over until I can afford a complete new system. The card must be able to run a full HD resolution on my 22" LCD monitor and furthermore need to give me good picture quality when playing WOW. Since AGP is old technology, there seem to be very limited options. All that I could find so far is:
1. ATI Radeon 2400 PRO (Mustek)
2. Zotac nVidia Geforce 6200A (Take2)

The ATI seems to be the better card due to DirectX 10 support but if I understand the specs correctly it seems to be weaker than my old Geforce 6600 GT. (64bit memory vs 128bit memory).

If anyone here can maybe provide me with some recommendations as to:
1. Which AGP cards are currently still available in the SA market that I can have a look at and which supplier sells them?
2. If the ATI Radeon 2400 PRO is a good entry-level card?

I’ll prefer buying new to get warranty & support benefits.

Thank you in advance.

dude - save yourself the schlep and just get a new mobo - I recon you could get a new one for R700 or so and even cheaper if you buy 2nd hand

what chip have you got, is it a 775 ?

The cheapest new AGP card I can find is R600. I have an old AGP 6200 that I don't use anymore. Where are you based? You can have it for R1000 or so??

i'd rather buy a cheap R500 mobo and a R500 3D Card than a 6200 for R1000

Yeah, 1k for an AGP card is expensive ... especially considering it's old and 2nd hand.

But its a 8X, and has a 64bit bus ;) Actually I meant R100 or so (no idea what its worth)- normally I would just give it away, but I need to buy a cheap PCI express card for my server and it costs R400....

ask him R400 then - i think that's a much more fair price than R1000

I Traded away my 8500GT for 2 packs of smokes

I bought a 6200 for my server brand new and I payed less than that lol. I rate its woth about R300 perhaps. I sold a FX5200 for R150 though...well I asked them to make an offer and he said R150 so I agreed happily :)

Socket 478. Cannot just do the mobo, everything else is also too old. My setup was top of it's range a couple of years ago and it still performs very well for what I use it for, just the gfx card that is a problem.

I'm in Randburg. Tanx for the offer, I'll let you know if I'm interested in the 6200. I do not want to do get something weaker than my old 6600 GT.

I remember those days...had a 2.8Ghz 478 and it was quite something back then. Now its been religated to server 03.

Synaesthesia & Silverlight. Thank you for the responses. I'll check the links tonight at home. Those sites are blocked at my work.

do people not know how to freaking read an entire 2 PAGE thread before commenting?

a 6200 is MUCH worse than your 6600 and might even struggle to run WoW. There's an HD3650 AGP at Zaps for about R1k (http://www.zaps.co.za/?pid=26879), but you could probably get a better deal by looking in classifieds like other people have mentioned.
