Definitely an Afrihost issue @Afrigirl

1000/250 Mbps Vuma customer on Afrihost:

Test over wifi to London on normal Afrihost - see attachment. Getting 56 DL and 125 UL
Test over same wifi in the same position but connected to Nord VPN servicer in SA then speed test to London getting 300+ and full upload of 264. @Afrigirl whats the story here?

So the reason why you see better speeds on a VPN is because the TCP retransmits happen between you and the VPN server which is around 4ms or lower where as doing a speedtest direct the retransmits happen at 160ms+ causing the speeds to tank very fast.

Surprise, surprise - the issue still remains and no change on international bandwidth. Local fine but london and new york seem throttled.

Please advise?

I have had the same issue for a couple weeks now. Download goes well but upload is non-existent across every international server I test. Local seems to be unphased.

I'm on Openserve (Queensburgh), fwiw.

I believe @Afrigirl gave you a test account to test with. The speeds were very similar to us on the Openserve test account but were good on Cool Ideas due to them using tcp accelerators in their network.

Openserve harties have been quite problematic as they have a single backhaul that is frequently affected by breaks and we believe this is the reason for poor tcp performance for Openserve clients in this area. Generally Openserve is quite good in areas where there is multiple backhauls.

I understand the breaks but yet full line speed are achievable on other ISP's on these very same lines. Tests were done to Cool Ideas with full line speeds to New York as well as another ISP achieving 50% of the line speed. On Afrihost, download speeds to New York are consistently between 85 and 115 mbps on a 500/250 line.

We do have a site in Brits achieving the same speeds as in Hartbeespoort also with Afrihost and Openserve fibre hence the question if there are other users achieving line speeds to New York.

This is not the norm but it's dependant on the routes to and from the server used for testing, fno and hardware. TCP over high latency is a problem in general. You need an accelerator build into the network or use some form of vpn or intermediate server to help with any buffer or restransmits.

To test this you can download qbittorrent. Change the connection mode to utp only for peer to peer connection and then download the latest ubuntu torrent. uTP is based on UDP so it will be fast in fact you will likely even max your 1Gbps line with only international peers and that is because its UDP.

I think I'll just keep fiddling with Win 11 as it is.
It's just a work PC I use during the day.
Try to keep off my PC after hours, unless I have unfinished work to do.

It appears to be the easiest solution. Just wondering why it doesn't say anywhere on their website that the advertised speeds are only for local traffic.

Nope, this is what they do, as many have said, rather find a ISP that is willing to help. Unfortunately most of them lack support. They will sign you up and take your money bur aftersales support is useless
