Afrihost APN high battery drain - EXPLAINED (not solved)

Looks like the LTE, because when I changed network mode to 3G/2G only the battery usage is back to normal.

I am using a Samsung Galaxy S8 and I dont have a problem. What phone do you have?

As I mentioned in the other thread MTN has actually started to rollout 3 lte carrier aggregation and since that on my S8 I have also noticed a battery drain.

Before it was just 2ca but now since I mostly only see 3ca the battery is draining faster.

Samsung Galaxy J5 2016.

My battery usage was absolutely fine on the MTN APN. On Afrihost, I used the phone in Cape Town and Joburg and it was bad in both places.

Have been on Afrihost APN for a while and occasionally switch back to MTN data, and I have seen no difference on my P8 lite

But LTE is overkill for mobile phones.

3G is fine for the average user, LTE isn't going to make that WhatsApp message come through any faster than on 3G.

Mobile games like Fortnite, Vainglory and Mobile Legends.... LTE is way better than 3G. Also the upload speed on LTE is better than 3G.

My battery drain was normal on MTN.

Been on afrihost apn on mtn sim for years on multiple phones. No issues with battery drain using lte. Currently on iPhone 6. Prior phone was huawei mate 7.

I take back what I said. Now I see it. I have switched back to MTN apn now. Will see how long the battery is lasting.

I'm necro'ing this thread, because I have noticed high battery drain on Afrihost recently. Technically, I don't know if its MTN or Afrihost.

I have an S7, that's my daily and over the last few weeks my standby draw has gone up to 5+%/hr. I'm on WiFi at home, but 4G when at work. After Exhaustively searching for a solution, I decided to use my recently-factory-reset Mi A2 Lite to investigate. I only installed Accubattery.

I popped in an MTN SIM with the Afrihost APN and a Telkom SIM together. I kept the WiFi on and connected to my home network. After 14 hours, my standby was at 2.4%/hr.

So I took out the MTN SIM, leaving the Telkom SIM in. I kept the WiFi on, but disconnected from my home network. After 6 hours, my standby usage was 0.2%/hr.

I'm shocked at how much it was draining my battery. I am going to be doing a few more tests to verify.

Has anyone else been experiencing this battery drain?

Nobody else seems to be having this issue by the looks of it.

Nonetheless, here are the results of my testing:

Mi A2 Lite:
(recently factory reset with no other apps installed or settings changed other than the initial set up)

Connected to Wifi, with no SIM, the standby drain is <0.1%/hour. Adding in the Telkom sim, the drain is still <0.1%/hour. Disconnecting from Wifi and using Telkom LTE increases the standby drain to 0.2-0.3%/hour. Swapping out the Telkom sim for the MTN one and using the Afrihost APN sees the standby drain surge to around 2.4%/hour regardless of whether I am connected to a Wifi network.

Each case was tested over a 24 hour period and done more than once.

Oddly enough, switching off the mobile data, but still using the Afrihost APN, reduces standby drain to 1.2%/hour. I was expecting it to go down to about 0.2%/hour, because the APN should not be in use.

Galaxy S7:

On the Afrihost APN, the standby drain was 5-6%/hour, according Accubattery. After switching to APNs to MTN, it now hovers around 3%/hour.

My high battery drain was when the network mode was set to LTE. When I changed it back to 3G the battery usage went back to normal.

I repeated this recently when my battery drain was high and checked the mobile network setting, it had somehow reverted to LTE. Set back to 3G it is fine.

Hmmm, I have also been getting high battery drain over the past three or so weeks using Afrihost APN and MTN.

Going to try switching to 3G only and see what happens

Afrihost's response to my complaint:

Thank you for getting in touch with us regarding this issue.

Please kindly note that the Afrihost APN service itself cannot be compared with other networks as it runs simultaneously with the MTN network and therefore explains why it would consume more power. There is more processing that your device needs to do in order to connect to the Afrihost APN and We cannot do anything about this unfortunately.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused. We remain committed to assisting you should you have more questions.

I responded indicating that this has only been a problem after Air Mobile launched and that I have been using Afrihost data prior to that without the battery drain issue.
