@AfriNatic i noticed that even when my device connects to a WiFi network and uses WiFi calling, the public IP assigned on the lte side is still pingable from the outside until I change the APN back to mtn, so I'm pretty convinced at this point that my post above is the cause of the high battery drain while on the afrihost APN.
Would be interesting to see how much it helps having a CGNAT ip if possible.
So how did it go through the night? So far it seems to have made a big difference, same battery drain as the normal MTN APN, so far, the true test will be tonight to see how much usage there is overnight.
Will report back here with my findings![]()

@Jason-ZA thanks for the feedback - would be great if it could also increase the battery-life of my 4 year old phone!
Sounds like a good idea! Keep us updated pleaseI have received your message.
I'm chatting to Dev about it.
The issue seems to be bots on the internet doing port scans on public IP ranges that keeps the LTE radio active and prevents the phone from putting it to sleep even over wifi. This is causing the battery drain and other related issues.
I'm asking dev if we can investigate the possibility of natting Air Mobile clients by default and then on request remove nat. I will keep everyone updated on the progress of this.
Any updates @AfriNatic ? After 9 hours of minimal usage my battery is at 30%![]()
Thank youThe issue is still ongoing.
I have however logged it with Dev to change your mobile number to nat.
This made a huge difference to my battery usage btw. Used to be max 45% battery left once I'm done at work. Now sitting at 73%. Thanks again! The issue is still ongoing.

Hi @AfriNatic; has there been any updates from the Dev team?We are making some adjustments and Dev is working on code to assist with this. The aim is to nat by default and no-nat clients that request for public IP's
Hi @AfriNatic; has there been any updates from the Dev team?
New simcards should be natted by default if you need a public you can request it or if you are on a public you can request to be natted.
Some applications require port forwarding etc which you can't do behind somebody else's NAT. So it's nice having the option. So after 4 years this is now solved and we can close the ticket?
And we can look forward to saving on electricity and on battery replacements?
And as a bonus, burn through more data, anytime we wish?
Cool stuff!
