Just use -d like so

tracert -d mybroadband.co.za

to stop DNS lookups.

Tracing route to mybroadband.co.za [197.242.89.170]

Awesome! Thanks for pointing that out!

Dns timeouts will not cause stars on traces. They will cause numeric addresses to appear.

A star in a traceroute means a timeout receiving the icmp ttl exceeded packet expected.
It is a direct irrefutable sign of packet loss (assuming that hop does function correctly in traceroutes, which it does in this case ) .

You are indeed correct, but it will help me a lot to see a more detailed test, as a number of factors could have caused the TTL to be exceeded, it does not necessarily mean that there is an issue at the IPC.

For the past month or so, my NNTP downloads seem to have been subjected to drastic shaping on this supposedly unshaped and unthrottled account. My line, which has been upgraded to 20Mbps, is performing flawlessly. Numerous speed tests indicate that downloads come at the expected speed. Web browsing, email and video streaming are always smooth. It is ONLY usenet and torrents that are affected.

Over weekends and after about 10:30 at night, my NNTP downloads are also full speed. During work hours, the speed drops to ridiculous levels, varying widely. At the moment it's hovering between 50 and 100KB/s; sometimes it drops to single digits or even grinds to a complete standstill.

Last week, I contacted Support and received refreshingly friendly and prompt attention from one of the support staff. She promised to look into the matter, and this gave me some hope that at last something would be done. Since then, I haven't heard back, and a follow-up enquiry from my side has not elicited any response. Neither has a private message to AfriGenie received a reply.

On their Business DSL page, Afrihost enthusiastically promotes this product as follows: "Business DSL offers Premium, unmetered, unshaped and prioritised bandwidth 24 hours a day! It’s the performance of a capped account combined with the simplicity of an uncapped account - it’s the best of both worlds!" The "Small Print" at the bottom of the page confirms this promise: "Business DSL accounts are Guaranteed to be completely unshaped at all times." It is on the basis of this promise that I, like many other users, have signed up for this account.

To summarise, this is the state of affairs:

Only usenet and torrents appear to be affected -- all other internet services are fine and the line is fault-free.
The speed reduction only kicks in during work hours and is worst during peak times.
A test account with another ISP performs flawlessly at the same time that the Afrihost accout hits rock bottom.

Can this behaviour be explained by anything but shaping of particular protocols? How does Afrihost justify their failure to deliver on their promise? Such blatant misrepresentation of a product or service is not only unethical, it is unlawful. For how long should we suffer in silence while they take our money?

Still Major Packet Loss!!!

Our Business Uncapped accounts are definitely unshaped, and you should not be experiencing any sort of shaping UNLESS you have Business Optimization enabled for your Business Uncapped account in your ClientZone. This would definitely explain why you are seeing the results that you are.

Can you send me a PM with your username so that I can look into this for you.

I have made sure that Business Optimization is NOT activated. Sending PM.

Still?!

That's worrisome.

Can you quickly restart your ADSL modem and then test again, we made some changes to your Business Uncapped acccount.

Nope, Packet Loss still Big. Even After Rebooting Router..

packet loss is very bad and speed is going down the crapper again
are you taking from people to give to other people as it sure looks like it

as you are throttling our speed at the moment we can see the packet loss slightly improving
why don't you just sort your capacity out so we all get what we pay for

International speeds are currently piss poor:

Local:

Can't even watch twitch.tv on "Mobile" without buffering

Both my local and international are normal for 8Mbps:

Very strange how different AH customers have be subject to wildly different experiences.

Are you able to test any other streaming services? Are all Twitch streams being problematic or is a specific stream?

Tested 3 different Dota 2 streams, all had the same issue.

Its not just streaming, just browsing international web sites is slow.

Can you send me a PM with your ADSL username so that I can check up on the account itself, you should be seeing similar results to Bryn at the moment.

This is still Bad!! Can't do my work like this..

Rock solid 4Mbps connection today, international sites fast, real time services working reliably. What a pleasure. What changed?
