Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

My connection ground to halt too. But a router reboot cleared it.

Im also suffering, something is definitely up on the network...for me it has been 100% perfect for months, not one hitch...now latency is inconsistent, streaming is hit and miss and international is very erratic. Switching to FNB capped, full line speed, no prob, so it is not my line

Problems largely subside during the day:

And then return again at night. You'd think it would be the other way round - although ideally, it would never happen. Even though speed test manages full speed - the graph is still very erratic, as is browsing and streaming. (the latter being especially crap, as many have reported)

Any feedback AfriGuy/Man?

The above being said - I can currently only get ~400k/sec on NNTP.

It seems different protocols are affected differently e.g. where latency is important for example with streaming... Streaming has been dismal to say the least.

Hearing the guys moaning on the Home forum has being come tiresome but us business users have every right to bitch since we pay for an unshaped service and therefore you should not be having streaming issues. Since I am not at home I cannot comment on this, my World of Warcraft download is coming down at 170KB/s and since I had to use Team Viewer to see I think the rest of the line went to that.

Seeing a lot of complaints on myBB and other forums regarding AH account and speed. Not being able to shape the network enough to guarantee full speed for their business accounts isn't a good sign - neither is the lack of feedback or admission of there actually being an issue here. I hope to be proved wrong.

Not sure how much feedback others have been getting, but my ticket is still being investigated. I do feel that standard (non-latency dependant) traffic such as email, HTTP/HTTPs and SFTP/FTP work fine and faster than my previous Mweb connection.

Unfortunately latency dependant traffic (such as online gaming, Skype, VPN, Twitch.tv and other streaming) is very laggy/choppy. I have not been able to find a pattern as I have observed major issues at 5:30am (weekends and weekdays) as well as during the day. Since I mostly use my connection between 5am-7am and 6pm-9pm workdays I can't really comment how the line performs during regular business hours (but I would assume that outside regular business hours the service should have less contention).

There was also a concern from AH that my exchange is congested, but Telkom confirmed that this is not the case:
Telkom said:
The DSLam is however not congested, it is connected via a STM1 (155meg) link running at 18% utilization during peak times,

I did use Openweb and Webafrica accounts to demonstrate that the same lag/delays did not occur at the time when I experienced the AH issue. Perhaps AH Business Uncapped should then not be used for gaming/real-time services (which is a challenge as VPN suffers just as bad).

It would be interesting to hear if AH business uncapped users also face similar issues outside of regular business hours, then it sounds to me, that there is no true isolation of business and residential customers and I am starting to think that contention/QoS is managed in a pool of residential and business accounts and not as expected separately.

To be honest - if you just recently signed up for Business you've just got some bad timing - for the last month or so it's been fantastic. Last week around Friday night things suddenly fell to pieces, and the network hasn't recovered since. I'm just surprised AH are claiming there are no problems reported on the network, because it is VERY obvious the service has degraded.

On a related note, perhaps a cause / contributor: http://mybroadband.co.za/news/adsl/87629-peering-congestion-causing-adsl-problems-source.html

I am not experiencing any problems, I connect via the DBN IPC though.... Maybe the JHB & CPT IPC are congested.....

Spent 20 minutes waiting for someone to answer the telephone... want to migrate my line to AH but since no one answers the phone I can't do it. Sent an SMS, still waiting for the call.

Sorry about the wait :(
To migrate the line over to us just add the ADSL line onto your ClientZone and we'll take care of the admin work. You can also bundle the line to the data to save a few bucks :)

I'm finding the complete and utter silence regarding the current issues in this thread rather interesting. I see plenty of interaction from the reps in the normal uncapped section, where apparently some serious shaping is going on because the network is under strain - but nothing here, where shaping can't be blamed? Is AH just over-subscribed, or is something else going on at the moment?

Can't even stream a damn 360p Youtube video at the moment..
