Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback

Hi All

I really need some advise on this. I'm getting my Telkom voice line installed on Thursday and was going for the AH R279 1mb package. Given the horror stories on this thread I don't know anymore.....

I'm guessing the obvious choice given these circumstances would be to go for a business package.

Looking at that I need a bundled Data + uncapped Data deal, which would be the better option?

MWEB business? or Afrihost business

Can someone please advise me on the Price differences and QOS differences?

Thanks

US slow again...

Definitely seems like US traffic is not where it should be. Remember also that we terminate both our overseas cables in Europe, so we go via a secondary network to the States. But still, we should generally see better results.

Please drop me a PM, so we can run some tests on our side :(

To be honest - if you just recently signed up for Business you've just got some bad timing - for the last month or so it's been fantastic. Last week around Friday night things suddenly fell to pieces, and the network hasn't recovered since. I'm just surprised AH are claiming there are no problems reported on the network, because it is VERY obvious the service has degraded.

On a related note, perhaps a cause / contributor: http://mybroadband.co.za/news/adsl/87629-peering-congestion-causing-adsl-problems-source.html

We're doing our best to keep contention on Business at optimum levels and we do believe we've achieved that (even though it by shaping Uncapped users much more than we'd generally like). Our own tests are showing that performance is normal but there could be individual or intermittent factors that we also need to look at.

We are definitely concerned and our network team and directors are looking a various short term and long term options to stabilise performance.

I am not experiencing any problems, I connect via the DBN IPC though.... Maybe the JHB & CPT IPC are congested.....

Durban has not shown the same usage upsurge that we've seen in Gauteng (and Cape Town to a lesser extent). Each region is shaped based on the available IPC capacity for that region.

We can't speak for other ISPs, but our Business is completely unshaped and there is no QoS applied. Essentially a Business account is a Capped account in every sense except that it has a rate limit (according to your purchased package) and allows a single concurrent connection.

Sorry to hear that you've heard horror stories, we are experiencing higher demand than anticipated and that has resulted in more shaping on Uncapped accounts than we'd like (but only on downloads and torrents, not on ANY realtime services).

If you have questions, please PM, I'd be happy to chat and take the horror out of the stories :)

I'm finding the complete and utter silence regarding the current issues in this thread rather interesting. I see plenty of interaction from the reps in the normal uncapped section, where apparently some serious shaping is going on because the network is under strain - but nothing here, where shaping can't be blamed? Is AH just over-subscribed, or is something else going on at the moment?

I've responded to another post, but this specifically concerns me. I'm sorry if our team haven't been as present as we could be, we are definitely here and our only purpose is to assist, even if all we can offer is information.

Please always remember that if you PM you will always get an answer :(

I am a bit concerned. Woke up this morning to find that a 1.5GB torrent that should have finished very quickly was only finishing up this morning. There were enough seeds but my usage graph shows that there was basically no activity on my line between midnight and 6am.

Does anyone have a traffic meter they can recommend for Server 2012 Standard so that I can monitor network performance.

Anyone else experiencing slow international ? Local is line speed but international sitting at 1/4 line speed, getting 1.2mbps on 4mbps line, I was thinking of moving over to 40mbps VDSL, but what is the point if I can't even saturate a 4mbps line...

I have just 15 minutes ago voiced my concern that something like this might happen if More uncapped users sign up for Business uncapped. Please explain what you mean by contention as I am a layman.

For me it doesn't make sense to be on a uncapped acc. if you cant download.

Well, you say it appears to you that business uncapped is mostly unaffected, and others are saying their accounts are flying, but things are not looking up this side, at least for me. This is a local speed test from a minute ago:

I don't know, it almost seems like my account is not a Business uncapped account, judging from the ups and downs I've had over the time I've been with AH Business versus the experience of others on this forum who have had smooth sailing. There is no congestion on the exchange, or a traceroute wouldn't look like this:

Is it possible to have the account recreated, so we know it's definitely a Business uncapped account I'm on? I realise that's far fetched and unlikely, but honestly I don't know what to think at this point. Browsing is slow, I can't stream anything online without buffering and downloads are running at maybe half speed only by pumping up the number of connections, all while you/others report no problems.

When you say it has resulted in "more shaping on Uncapped accounts than we'd like", that excludes us business uncapped account users right? Since you said the business uncapped is completely unshaped.

Just wanted to clear this up. Thanks

100% correct. There is never any shaping whatsoever on our Business Uncapped or Capped accounts.

Yes unshaped but if they hitting their capacity limits then contention increases...nothing ever gets mentioned about contention...it is a very NB metric and a closely guarded secret because that is where IPS's profit comes from.

I know a lot of people complain lately, but I have subscribed to Business Uncapped 1 Mb since 15 Sept and what a pleasure. I upgraded to 2 Mb today. One phone call to Telkom and 5 minutes later the line is upgraded. Then click upgrade on client zone and almost immediately full 2Mb line speeds!

Happy customer.

Porting work line + Account over to Afrihost Business 4MB Bundle, Line Migration returned this:

Created Note

2013-10-01 (011) 447-**** **** **** Migrated In was submitted in file AfrihostOrders20131001002011.xls

Is this a good thing?
