If the IOS update is damaging the entire network, can't some sort of throttling be applied to the update? The internet is completely unusable for us as we're barely getting 1mbps on a 40mbps vdsl connection.

Yeah my net is still buggered. Took me 6 hours to download 1.4GB yesterday. Not even trying today. Upload of a 500mb file took 8 hours last night. Baaaaad

AfriMan, stop using the iOS update as a scapegoat:
1) Several users have pointed out that their issue started well before the release of the iOS update
2) Several users also pointed out that line speeds go back to normal at 2am in the morning and then suddenly fall to abysmal speeds once 8am hits

It doesn't take a genius to see that the iOS update cannot be the reason for the issue and that AH is throttling... unless there is a mass conspiracy and that all your business users/iOS users are synchronising their watches to hit your network with everything they have at precisely 8am every day.

This is not an uncommon, or even far fetched theory - as seen in the following links :

Fact remains that we are paying for a premium Business Uncapped account that is GUARANTEED by Afrihost to be unshaped, unmetered and unthrottled at all times, and we are getting throttled/shaped.

THAT, dear Afrihost, is utter bull****.

It's something we did consider but we were concerned that Apple users (who are clearly a big part of our client base) would be negatively affected and it would also make the additional demand last much longer. It was not an easy decision, there are merits to all the approaches :(

The account is unshaped, and unthrottled. There is no intentional policy slowing down your account. We never guarantee that your bandwidth will be uncontended at all times. Contention is a normal function of bandwidth provision and we can never fully guarantee anything in relation to that.

Dammit ... going to sell my iPad or offer it to RPM as a prize giveaway :D

I had to buy additional prepaid bandwidth this morning from someone else, as I am unable to access my hosted servers and even transfer a couple of mb of client updates when on AH. Seems like they forgot some people actually use the BUSINESS uncapped to try and run a BUSINESS?

We definitely are aware of clients being affected for both business and private use. We are truly sorry that this is the case and I promise we'll keep doing what we can to improve your experience.

Afrihost should do the right thing and offer refunds or reduce our next bill due to these issues. I am sure we are not all unreasonable, and know things will go wrong time to time, but this is now getting out of hand. It seems like we are expected to wait, pay and wait. What other industry allows this, you cannot sell a product and have no capacity to offer.

So are we to assume everytime there is an IOS update the network is going to do this?

We do everything we can to mitigate the effect, but because of the way Apple does their updates, historically it's had a negative effect on our network.

I think you're contradicting yourself and mixing issues here. A prior demand issue, limited to the South, is a seperate issue. But by your own logic, it cannot be coincidental that national demand increased unilaterally, at 7pm, unless a whole lot of people all decided to increase their usage at the same time. You may want to create layers of conspiracy here, and I can understand you are frustrated, but that is simply not the case.

Out of interest, which product are you using and which region are you in?

As previously stated, I'm no longer an AH client but a close colleague of mine works from home using your Business Uncapped package and is suffering from heavy line speed issues since last week. We are based in Johannesburg.

Whenever this issue is brought up, AH just ignores it until it goes away...

The issue is that this causing some serious productivity issues from a business perspective. Its seems unreasonable to have businesses suffer in favor of an Apple user. Even if Afrihost had to refund me for the entire month, that doesnt cover the financial loss due to unproductivity for the entire day that the internet is not working.

I would recommend throttling the IOS update during the day and opening it up after midnight.

I know they do, and that's why I keep on mentioning it. I think the way things are managed at Afrihost, and I am not talking about the Afrihost guys here, but higher management really need to look at how their company is performing, or maybe since MTN has more say they don't give a damn anymore.

Odd how at 06:00 this morning, my account was running at full speed, at 07:00, half speed, at 08:00 quarter speed
