I agree with manfromthesouth. There is no reason for businesses to be downloading torrents (Staff will abuse this)... I work from home, have a business account, and I download very little torrents (mainly sport but I can do without it). All I am really interested in is real time traffic receiving priority as I want a stellar browsing and streaming experience (DStv will never see a penny from me again). It is for this reason I chose Afrihost.
I am sure that heavily restricting P2P and News Server traffic on business accounts will free up loads of capacity so everybody can enjoy an improved experience. Let people wait hours, days even, for the free stuff!
Ok, so you tell me what AfriHost product should be used to download torrents? The Home uncapped account that is shaped into hell all the time?
You do have a point, but the Afrihost business accounts have primarily two kinds of customers: business clients, who need unshaped access to real-time services (VPN, RDP, etc), and then home-clients, who want an unshaped experience. So if you suddenly kick off the heavier users (read home-users with needs), where are they to go?

The problem is the unshaped uncapped at other providers are a lot more expensive.
Could be Afrihost made the product too cheap.
We design and advertise the product to be unshaped, essentially it's a Capped account that has a rate limit and is locked to a single line. It composed of the same rules and provisions. If we were to arbitrarily change the rules without notice, it would not only make us guilty of falsely advertising our product, but there would be a massive backlash from clients who specifically signed up for unshaped performance.
It's likely. All I want is my capped product to not suffer as a result of an overfilled IPC.
Yes. Easing overall network load by restricting P2P and News Servers downloads on business accounts should result in less shaping for Home Uncapped users.
It also doesn't help that Afrihost's business accounts are dirt cheap. Given the choice between heavy shaping and an extra R200 for a 4Mbps unshaped uncapped option I would choose the R200 every time. I have a suspicion that the increased demand and latency spikes is related to an exodus from Home Uncapped to Business Uncapped.
Just last week I was motoring along on a Business account and now my average speed has been reduced by at least 1 Mbps... It has reached the point where I am seriously considering the 4Mbps, 300Gb capped option but it would seem that it has been affected too.

Not all Torrents are used for pirate/illegal stuff. I do a lot of beta testing for games and other software, as a business. Most of these downloaded as P2P as it reduces the load on the hosting side. So be careful condemning torrents.

I work from home and need a business line to my house for my own work. because it's just me really - I do what ever I want on my line. I stream youtube for musior, or stream radio etc etc.
I also work late at night (skype to america often) so quality is important to me. I also use the line for my normal homely needs, such as gaming, twitch streaming etc etc.
I want quality, but at the same time I want to be able to use it as I like because it is my home internet too.

Yeah, cause their home uncapped account is practically useless, unless you are into watching lots of videos on the net.

I know it is a common Linux distribution method, and yes, there are legal uses. My point is to not totally penalize them, create an account that is more expensive for P2P. As a business, if you are totally dependent on it, a difference of R300pm, hypothetically, should not bother you. That difference should, however, make some business users for non business uses think twice.
I'm not an economics fundi by any means, and there is probably some very serious reasons why this can't be done, but what I'm suggesting is if supply is not increased, lower demand by increasing price.

Can you please explain rate limited?
I understand that you can't just arbitrarily change one of your options but I think people will be happy if notice was sent out with regard to policy changes, provided it gives them time to look for other options. I am almost at the point of paying twice as much as I am now for a capped account provided you can guarantee that I will not be affected by the issues currently affecting both Home and Business uncapped accounts.

As an independent game tester, a R300 increase will affect my monthly costs, not all businesses are large corporations with huge turnovers. The Business accounts must remain as they are. Maybe the fixed ips are causing issues on the network, or there are other issues been kept from us users.
It's really not our place to tell people what kind of traffic is appropriate. Next we'd say what you can and can't download on the network and it's slippery slope.
We try to keep our products as simple as possible, with as much overlap as we can provision so that we can offer a great experience no matter what your normal (and sudden unexpected) requirements are.
Rate limiting on the accounts is basically paying for a line speed. So if you have a 10Mbps line and sign up for a 4Mbps Business account - you'll be rate limited to 4Mbps.

I can't tell if my sarcasm detector is broken or not. The remedy to these issues is simple: Afrihost must increase their capacity. Punishing users for utilising the service exactly as it was advertised is very MWEBish and look how well that turned out.
