Afriteam I would just like to ask a little question...

I see that Seacom is down, what I would like to know is when Seacom does down and you have to move your subscribers to another cable system like SAT 3 and EASSY do you then start to shape protocols on the business users? Because my P2P last night was SHOCKING! And in fact its still bad.

Afrihost, why has my business account been shaping during the day for the last few days?

Completed 2014-01-16 05:59:14
Downloaded in 30 minutes 34 seconds at an average of 208 KB/s

Completed 2014-01-16 10:10:23
Downloaded in 1 hour 44 minutes 55 seconds at an average of 136 KB/s

The above pattern is true for all content for the last few days.

2MB. JHB. PP Off.

Afrihost uses WACS and EASSY simultaneous, certain areas traffic via wacs, and other areas via eassy, and SAT3 as backup according to there network map.

Thanks for that info, figured that MTN would use all the cables and since SEACOM is one of the cheapest that they would favour running traffic over it rather than the others.

Just tested my "Afrihost Business 2MB Unshaped Uncapped" line - results are sad. Any issues on the cable?

SAIX.NET:
Download Speed: 627 kbps (78.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 347 kbps (43.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 841 ms
16 January 2014 15:23:46

Definitely pretty awful there. Ping concerns me though, what do traceroutes show?

Essentially no difference between Home and Business when it comes to international throughput - and to think of the price difference  Could you maybe try test with another International server or two? Try London/Maidenhead in the UK, specifically, just avoid the crappy Namesco server

I find I get very different results from international servers on speedtest.

Could I recommend that everyone download our Network Test App, so we always know what results we're looking at?

Excellent work!

I would suggest that you also add single thread and multi thread download test.

We have a few more features planned for the future. I know we will have a download test, but not sure what the specs would be for now :)

Theirs is much nicer :D However, I think they should also include a download test - as it is good to see speeds etc

It also depends on the source. We'd have to put some thought into exactly how we would do this, to ensure it's actually ideal (or quantifiable) conditions.

Hi all,

Been a lurker on MBB for years, but i dont post much as most questions have been posted and answered at some point in the past.

But i cant seem to find an answer for this one:

My p2p downloads are terribly slow and inconsistant as of December 2013, while Steam, Origin, YouTube, Twitch, etc all perform amazingly well (Steam always, as in always hits the 220kBps download mark).
Havent had a torrent hit more than 80kBps on my Business Bundle and never for more than 15minutes or so at a time.
Torrents will also be 'inactive' for hours on end, with sporadic 5 or 15 minute spikes.

I am on the 2Mbps Business Uncapped bundle.

The p2p torrents i am trying to download are all very popular items with many (as in hundreds and sometimes thousands) seeders and leechers.

Used to be on a normal Telkom 2Mbps line where torrents would fly between 00:00 and 08:00!

At work at the moment so cant post screenshots and the like, but will do later tonight if needed.
Thanks in advance for any advice, info or even a joke or 2.

JC

We don't use Seacom as a primary cable. The only 'possible' effect is that if other ISPs using Seacom primary start moving over to redundancy on WACS/EASSy, that we might see slightly more contention. I don't think that has been the case though.

I also see Seacom reported services restored yesterday :)

You need to switch off protocol prioritization in your control panel.

Please make sure that Protocol Prioritisation is de-activated in ClientZone. You can even activate and de-activate to be 100% sure that it is off.

Or PM me so I can ensure that P2P is not being shaped :)

There should not be any shaping whatsoever on business - check that Protocol Prioritisation if off in CZ :) Also - AH do not have any capacity over seacom, so there shouldnt be anything affecting us here

Hey JC,

Try turning off Protocol Prioritisation in clientzone - that should fix everything for you :) Its a feature (completely voluntary), which shapes P2P traffic for business owners :)

Hi again people,

Thx a million AfriMan, Chevron and Zertop!
I turned protocol prioritisation off, and it is working like a charm!

I read about this feature before, but thought it was 'turned-off' by default.

Have a good weekend all!
JC
