Afrihost Capped ADSL Feedback (MTN) - New beginning

It was running fine over the weekend. Twitch was taking on source like a champ and YouTube was flawless. Then today YouTube was struggling with a 240p video.

Glad to hear the weekend performance was better, looks like your poorer experience does fall in line with spikes in latency and demand from our end today though :(

That would be 2mb down on a 100mb fibre line.

Ah I see.
Odd that upload is so much higher than the down - I know we're working on normalising a few things in the North, so I'm sure you should see an improvement soon.

WebAfrica is fine. Exchange ping is fine (8ms). Is this a faulty node, or do you guys just keep screwing it up in trying to fix other areas?

This is on our end I'm afraid :(
We're seeing some latency spikes in the East at the moment.

But is there a reason? I've had this happen about once or twice a week since I have joined Afrihost, and it seems that every time it was fixed, it would just break again some time later. It was fine for the last two months or so, but it's only started again in the last two weeks.

It's due to higher demand :( We're implementing two POC networks to tackle this and provide a better experience for everyone.

That's good news, but, not to be rude, how had this not been implemented previously? The good ol' saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" doesn't quite apply to technology. It seems that Afrihost has always been on the back foot when it comes to network performance; wait for a disaster, and then fix it, rather than preparing for it in the first place.

EDIT: I really don't want to leave Afrihost. Moving to another ISP is just going to be a hassle, and I don't want data that I can only use from 12-6AM... the only other ISP with the same deal (Axxess) is on the same damn-faulty network.

That's not rude at all :) Happy to answer the question.
We're the first to admit that things haven't been the best recently, and we've honestly done our best to provide the best experience.

Upgrades are always hard to do, we've done multiple very proactively - but we feel that it needs to done quicker, hence the POC networks that are currently in testing.

Pure Internet Joy! But unfortunately you have to choose between terrible latency, or terrible speed as the illusive unicorn of functional internet does not really exist on the Afrihost network. I am not usually one to complain, and as a a customer for the past 5 years this is the first time I have chosen to do so. The promise of problems being sorted out at some future date simply don't cut it anymore. The end of the month can't come soon enough.

Sincerely sorry about the issues :(
Thanks for sticking with us for so long, we really do appreciate your business!

I promise you, we're not resting until we have this resolved.

Our work connection is experiencing major packet loss.

Ping statistics for 66.8.14.57:
Packets: Sent = 756, Received = 644, Lost = 112 (14% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 26ms, Maximum = 747ms, Average = 39ms

Ping something else... If I ping that same IP I get 25% packet loss.

If I ping cnn.com for instance there is no loss.

The problem may be with whatever you are pinging.

EDIT: Nevermind.. Im getting 50% loss on feedly.com and liveleak.com now too....

rad.

"We're the first to admit that things haven't been the best recently" - You guys must be archaeologists where 'recently' would mean from a couple of hundred years to maybe 10,000years! You have had problems since you jumped on MTN - I know because I have suffered through it!
You are experts at stringing us along with 'Pie in the Sky' promises of better things just around the corner.
What will you do if the POC's prove to be yet another failure?

I'm confident that they won't fail, we've learnt a lot recently and implementing changes to where we've dropped the ball previously.

Sorry to hear that. Strangely, my reports are showing that performance should have been good through the weekend expect late on Sunday in the South. One traceroute that I did see on PM was showing high Telkom latency, so not sure if yours showed the same. I didn't do much testing on the current network this weekend myself :(

Even though latency is low, it's hard for me to see if demand is low enough that throughput will be as good as it should be. Demand in the North seemed like it was fairly consistent throughout the weekend.

Yup. My latency is perfectly fine, otherwise I would have thought I have been thrown with congestion again (without my backup account working fine). Latency to afrihost.com is consistently under 33ms.

This seems very severe :( Seeing a few really poor results in the North today.
How was the connection earlier today or over the weekend?

Grabbed a file link to a youtube video.... Maxes out at 60KB/s :(

Down South local is fine. Running at 18.25mbps down.
International is stuffed.
- US East Coast [Towerstream] - 4mbps - http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4484700102
- UK London [Seacom] - 6.7mbps - http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4484711705

Any news Afripeeps? Or has everyone given up on this network in favor of the POC ones?
:wtf:
