Afrihost Capped ADSL Feedback (MTN) - New beginning

Most definitely something wrong with the line then. Either corroded or line fault. You could try just ordering a new line and then cancelling the old one once it is installed?

First make a Telkom tech come out and check though.

I don't know hey, for a 6mbps line it's performing pretty well when Afrihost doesn't have problems:

:(

Tried to download a 75MB file (http) on Afrihost. 40KB/s.
Switch to an IS-based account and whoosh. 800KB/s.

Mine was 4Mbs from the days it was called Telkom Fastest.
When they supposedly upped all the lines to 10Mbs mine never went higher than 6 and stayed that way for a couple of years, but with the recent software upgrade it is now a rock solid 10 Mbs Down 1024 Kbs up so I guess the equipment / software used plays as large a part as the distance and copper condition some times.

Remember that Telkom also installed fibre to many DPs from the exchange, this also improved the ability for some lines to achieve higher speeds more stably that previously.

:(

So many gigs, and buggerall that I can do with it.
Trying to watch a Youtube video in 720p but at 150-200KB/s there's not much I can do except wait for it to buffer every five seconds.

Sorry to hear that. Strangely, my reports are showing that performance should have been good through the weekend expect late on Sunday in the South. One traceroute that I did see on PM was showing high Telkom latency, so not sure if yours showed the same. I didn't do much testing on the current network this weekend myself :(

You should be able to get 20Mbps on that line. You are paying for 10Mbps and only receiving 6Mbps.

ASSIA could be managing the line down to 6 for a number of reasons. But Telkom are introducing an 8Mbps line product soon, so that may be a better way to go to get 6 and save a little. Not sure of the final pricing, but expect it will fall below the current R399 price from our side.

Even though latency is low, it's hard for me to see if demand is low enough that throughput will be as good as it should be. Demand in the North seemed like it was fairly consistent throughout the weekend.

This is a bit weird though, the second trace just suddenly pops up in the US, with a pretty odd ping. I think that's what I'm reading, the detail is a little fuzzy even when I zoom in. We're both peering with Akamai CDN's, except we peer in Amsterdam, which is where our cable terminate. Maybe it's different, though I don't know any local cables that link directly to the US (I know the BRICS cable is meant to at some stage)

So... do we have an ETA on the super duper awesome ninja interwebs yet? I need to know before the 24th...

Very poor latency almost ruined gaming/streaming last night... luckily I had a backup account. On our local server all Afrihost users (3 of them) had a ping of ~250. Switched to a backup ISP on my side and ping was 10 again.... they had to struggle on.

It should be noted that download speeds were fine as far as I could see.

I don't have an ETA for clients to get onto the network but I know that we've got a whole lot of internal people now stress testing the network and testing popular protocols and services like gaming, Skype, VPN, SSH etc so that we make sure that when clients test, all the heavy lifting has already been done.

How about torrents, Netflix, etc... who uses Skype.... seriously dude...
