Afrihost Capped ADSL Feedback (MTN) - New beginning

Streaming is super slow.

Hulu and HBO Now are unusable: Buffers the whole time.

Netflix is blocky as heck. Can't even read the text.

I don't think that any User even an "average" User should have to deal with slow or intermittent service just because they are unaware of how their connection should perform. And it is these Clients that we go to great lengths to ensure that they have a connection that is reliable and stable. We value all of our Clients and we really do take giving them a great experience very seriously.

When this doesn't happen we make damned sure we fix it, and these latency issues are a major focus point at the moment.

I have no doubt you do, but here on the forums it isn't your average users and they are the ones that demand what they pay for. So if they are nit getting that then they (like me) go to an ISP which is better (no one is perfect).

I am also having the worst possible speeds - WestRand. Nothing works. Streaming, downloading, all bad. Capped and uncapped. On both my ADSL lines. Afrihost capped account on a 7MB sync is slower than a capped Telkom line on a 2mb sync (and the account is capped - over usage and now limited).

So, a normal ADSL line from Afrihost on a 7mb line performs worse than a "capped" Telkom line on 2mb

:(

That's disappointing! What sort of throughput are you getting?

Which DNS Service are you using?

Would you be able to post a speedtest as well as a traceroute to Afrihost.com so that I can try locate the issue affecting you.

Putting up a notice is not going to lead to an increase in queries - I think it would do the exact opposite.

The 'average' user is not going to notice a 100-200ms bump in latency, they go to google/skype/youtube/facebook what have you, if it loads for them, they classify it as working. The average user does not head to the afrihost homepage for sh*ts and giggles and then spend their time and money sitting in a telephonic queue to ask what the problem is on the network status section even though their websites load fine - they're not that stupid, don't treat them as such.

While I can bear latency problems (for a limited time), I cannot bear companies that choose not to disclose (or selectively inform a few of) their paying customers about a problem that is negatively affecting the service that they are paying for. Especially if it has been an issue for over 4 weeks.

Be the good guys, be transparent.

Thanks.

The speed could be better, but 2.8Mbps is on the lower scale of the speeds you can expect with a 4Mbps.

How is this translating it your actual connectivity experience?

Twitch is still borked. Can hardly get 100kB/s

I'm still experiencing very intermittent performance on Twitch.tv myself, the quality varies greatly depending on the Stream. Which channels do you primarily watch?

Is there something up with DNS?

My pc (using google 8.8.8.8) is fine, other laptop (using default dns settings) seems to not be able to do any lookups?

There shouldn't be any issues with DNS at the moment, but I'll check with our Team to be sure. The other laptop, is it using 196.7.7.7 / 196.7.8.9?

Not sure, just switched my router to use google and it's sorted, would you like me to revert back and check?
