Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Yeah, I'd say they're very similar. I'm a little concerned that there is a little more variance in ours, though the end destination latency is the most important one. But if I look at this, the variance and spiking seems to be after you leave our network and go onto Level 3 (which we both peer with) network. So I dunno if this is something that's happening on our bandwidth necessarily.

That's all Greek to me :P

All in all Afrihost has been fantastic for me, and of course the service from you is top notch. Just thought it was interesting and wanted to find out the reasoning behind it. If you'd like me to run any other tests let me know, I'll PM them to you, I don't want to clog up the thread :)

You should run the tests with a bigger sample. 1.3MB and 1.8MB samples are too small and will give you inconsistent results. For a 4Mit line I would try the 6MB download test.

Per your suggestion, I re-ran the test using a 6Mb download...

I've put some "real-world" speed test comparisons up in the VDSL subforum: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/630175-Capped-accounts-on-40Mbit-VDSL-(Comparison)

Nice. About the only streaming I do is via the stock trading platform I use for US markets when those markets are open. The market data itself streams fine on the IS and MTN backbones. When I stream CNBC (not HD quality) through the trading platform, there's minor buffering no matter which backbone I use. My perception is that Afrihost (MTN) is marginally better, but not always. FWIW.

Please do drop me a PM so we can chat further. I'll do whatever I can to give you the best experience Afrihost can offer :)

I think there's a point where data is less important that your actual experience. I think that's one area where no-one can argue - you either like it or you don't. But glad to hear we're giving you a good experience so far :)

Just wanted to post a result on testmy.net (which I haven't used before (I've been reading this thread quite a bit, but quite a solid website I might add - its nice that its in the US, where all my streaming is from) - custom file size 25MB on a 20Mbps line.

I've been getting different speeds to the US on speedtest.net during the day, mostly between the 3-7Mbps mark.

Dallas (where the testmy server is)
3618683664.png
New York (I suppose the first landing of the TransAtlantic cables from Europe - where our cables land.)

Friday evening is when these tests were taken.

I agree there are many factors to take into account. I'm getting 9-11Mbps to London, so I almost think the speed drops are dependent on the foreign systems.

I'm happy with Afrihost, and the streaming experience has been good over the last few evenings.

I went from Business Uncapped to a 82GB capped account this month (don't know how afrihost worked that out), but nevertheless. I've currently used 32% of my cap so far. How am I doing? I don't know whats acceptable and what not (I've never been on a capped account before)

BTW have no complaints so far wrt to speeds, ping and all that. I'm lovin it :)

I think anything is acceptable on a capped account, since you are paying per GB. You should be getting priority, i.e. unshaped speeds with your capped account too. But coming from a Business Uncapped account, you most likely won't notice an difference as they're unshaped too.

Have to say my capped account runs better than what my business account did. I can now finally watch youtube vids in HD with no buffering. Just hope I don't go overboard. If I don't run out of cap by the end of the month then I'll prob stay on cap for a while still.

Same I moved and my capped account is faster

Glad to hear you are getting a good experience with us, especially to US services which is always critical to most users (though these days CDNs all around the world make this less crucial).

I think experience is always the best indicator. If you're happy with streaming and you're getting enough throughput to run all your services at the speeds you more or less expect, that speaks volumes more than a speedtest.

Business and Capped are essentially built from the same rules and drawn from the same data pool, so there is very little expected difference in performance, unless your line is rated differently to the Business account you're using (i.e.10mbps line with 4Mbps Business).

Nope still on 2mb that's why I find it weird.

Any router / modem recommendations?? Was thinking of the D-Link DSL-2750U Wireless N ADSL2 4-Port Wi-Fi Router??

Depends on what you are looking for in terms of specific performance and local network configurations. But D-Link and Netgear are probably the bigger names in routers at the moment. But there are some very good brands around :)
