Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Hey AfriMan,

I have been using my Afrihost account the last few days and for the first time in weeks we've struggled to stream 480p content in the evening (during the day it seems perfect) on a 20mb VDSL line. My WA account didn't buffer once in about 3 weeks of use. Of course it may be coincidental but what are the tests I should run so you can have a look? Traceroutes?

Sorry to hear that :( Shouldn't be anything on our end that's slowing down your streams.
Run some traceroutes when the issue pops up again so we can get a better idea of what's happening :)
 
Still no news from telkom regarding line upgrade. Should I submit the request again? Hasn't greyed out the option so it is bit confusing.

If it's been well over 48 hours there might be something wrong.
Drop me a PM with your number and I'll see if I can spot anything :)

Yeah my tests yield the same results! Afrihost keep saying there is nothing wrong but time and again people post proof of packet loss and poor streaming performance!

Will run them again tonight and see how they look. Was playing Destiny Beta, which is apparently P2P based, and my lag was ridiculous. Popped in the WA account and my connection felt solid.

Shouldn't matter if it's P2P based, the Capped accounts aren't shaped :)

I'd like to have our team check into a few things from our end - could you drop me a PM with a bit more info please?

I'll do the in game tests again tonight and also do a traceroute to the server. What other tests should I perform to help you guys? :)

Traceroutes should be good, we can pass all that off to our team to run further diagnostics with you.
 
No offence, but numerous people have raised concerns about poor streaming performance for a long time already, nothing has been done about it and I doubt anything will anytime soon (if ever)

I've grown accustomed to the random "poor" performance every now and again, usually starting at night.

For the most part I'm happy using Afrihost until something better comes along.

That definitely not cool at all, our aim is always for our clients to have the best experience we can deliver.

Maybe we should troubleshoot directly with you to see if we can focus on improving your individual experience? PM me.
 
Thanks for the offer Afriman, but I don't want to waste your time nor mine. Like everyone with the same issue have mentioned, all you do is switch to a different ISP and bobs your uncle, few hours later switch back to Afrihost, problem solved.

Just read some of the latest comments on the Afrihost Uncapped Thread, seems like a lot of people are jumping ship, good news for us capped users, maybe the streaming will improve :D

I don't believe capacity or contention are currently issues on our network, so we should really look deeper into these issues to see if there are other elements that could be diminishing your experience. It's only with that hard data that we could identify if there are more widespread issues which can be resolved at the same time.

Definitely not a waste of my time ever :)
 
Anyone else having connection/syncing issues since this morning in the cape town region? I phoned telkom in the afternoon to try a port reset, it seemed to fix the issue for a bit but now SNR and Line Attenuation seem to be off quite a bit:

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin: 6.5 8.0 db
Line Attenuation: 41.0 31.0 db
Data Rate: 1984 256 kbps

Should be showing around 28 for SNR and 35 for Line Attenuation and 2048 since it is a 2mb line.

Do you guys pro-rata the capped account? My WebAfrica account has 700MB left - and the 1st is far.

Just tried to sign up a new package in the clientzone, looks like they do.

EDIT: but then you would have 2 accounts next month, WA and AH.

Cancelled WA, they shape the hell out of their capped accounts during the day. It was worse than my previous uncapped a accounts.
