Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Status
Not open for further replies.
Speed test to servers are not really a reliable test.
There are way to much that could influence it.
However, I found that the OOKLA speedtest server in Amsterdam gives constant and accurate information.

MTN international routes via Amsterdam, so it is reliable to test international to that OOKLA server in Amsterdam.
Anything beyond that point is out of the control of MTN.
There are multiple sources being peered to from there, and any international link from that point can be congest, have a problem or even the server you trying to reach.

I am not trying to excuse Afrihost/MTN from there responsibilities, but there is also only so much under there control.

Granted that flash speedtests aren't absolutely accurate... which is why I confirm with non flash speedtests(testmy.net), amazon video streaming(silverlight), and youtube (http 5 stream if I'm not mistaken). Also check local speeds for comparison. The trigger tho (prompting my running these) is always slow web response.... and that is a good indicator. Laggy youtube is as well

Re testing up to Amsterdam.. you're right... perhaps need to change my site choice:).
I used optimum online 'cause of Telkom's peering. Optimum has always been rock solid and a good choice.Need to recalibrate to Amsterdam for Afrihost.
Point of note tho... doesn't change the experience... slow browsing correlates 100% with a slow speedtest and vice versa... and importantly certainly doesn't help if they're fast till that point and no further. I need to get to where I need to go... typically the US... and they have done it to date. Wheels only wobbly for the last few days... but pretty wobbly ;)

Rgds & Thanks,
SD

Jannier's international is better than my local test. WTF?
That may explain why I constantly have streaming video issues on Youtube, Streetfire, etc. There must be a problem on my line.

International OOKLA Amsterdam:

There we go. Thanks Jannier. I used to get 10Mb/s local in the beginning, now the line has been synced down to 7Mb to try and see how it performs, but still having issues.

Line problem, please sort it out. Afriman has been PM'd my details numerous times already. Please don't phone me today, I am sitting with a bad throat and can hardly talk.

Hey dudes. I've taken my discussion offline per suggestion by AfriGuy, however will continue sharing insights with you all.
My connection speed this morning is... perfect! Speeds to Optimum Online (NY) and Ookla (NL) are perfect. > 3.4mbps.
Interesting thing to note regarding tracert's and latency --> I compared a poor tracert (1mbps) to the super fast one and there is no difference in routing and ping times on the super fast trace this morning are slightly higer than the slow traceroute. Moral of the story - don't read a 'clean' looking tracert as indication that there isn't an issue. This (view) is supported by the Telkom Uncapped thread where the tracert 's are not indicating a point of congestion yet there is apparently congestion on certain nodes. Just thought it might be interesting to share.

Rgds,

You are correct, there can be congestion on the nodes, and the tracert normally should show that.

I did 3 traces in a row and the result can be seen.

Come on now.... video streaming gone totally down the toilet.

Tracert to Youtube does not show anything weird, but why for the last 3 weeks has it been a mission to watch a Youtube vid at anything approaching decent quality? I do not pay 1000 bucks a month to be able to watch Youtbe vids at 120p or 360p......

I'm going to be posting local speed tests periodically to try and show when the service goes mushy. It's not a slight degradation in the service, it's a BIG drop in service quality, and it's infuriating.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/2819233368.png

Remember, this thread is supposed to provide feedback with the hopes that the powers that be will take note of the change in service since switching to MTN:

Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)
I thought I should start a thread for Afrihost's Capped products on the MTN network in anticipation of the move tomorrow.

Hi kingd53

Buy a 1gb account from plugg and test when you experiencing issues. High local pings like that normally point to congested exchange, but not always, so the easiest way is a process of elimination and try another ISP which is on a different backbone like IS (plugg, openweb, webafrica) or Vox (@lantic I think), not cybersmart (I have a 1gb capped account to test and it performs terribly when all others work normally) or another MTN ISP like axxess or whats the other new one? Oh yes, Razoweb (haven't heard any bad things about them yet), but because they use MTN and you trying to eliminate MTN backbone as the issue, see my logic?

@wingnut771 Thanks for the advice. Have tried something like that already with an fnb connect account and posted results in this thread:

Just changed to my fnb connect account to get a comparison:

1MB sync speed - Pinetown

Local:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/2802860902.png

International:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/2802865932.png

The fnb connect is definitely faster, both nationally and internationally!!

Not sure who fnb are with but I think they're on a different backbone. Gonna try get another account on a different backbone and test it against Afrihost. Will keep testing....

They are also with MTN Business and have only 1 IPC in Johannesburg

Good to know about FNB.

The way I figure it is to run a speedtest.net and see what provider it says.

Hey all,

Just thought I'd share that I'm still experiencing erratic International performance.
Intl: http://www.speedtest.net/result/2820207406.png 0.89mbps
Local is still a-ok: http://www.speedtest.net/result/2820211594.png 3.44mbps

Issue has been forwarded to someone from Afrihost's critical care support, which I'm really grateful for.
They aren't working the weekend so will have to wait for Monday, however the level of support compared to Telkom, is great... and I'm thankful for that! Email support is very responsive and AfriGuy/Girl/Man are always there to assist. Refreshing to find a provider who appears to care. Geez... Telkom! All you need to do is act like a business rather than modeling yourselves on the Dept of <name you fav government department here> Blooming Id1ots.

Here's a tracert for those of you who might be interested / be able to diagnose :)

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 219ms, Maximum = 477ms, Average = 313ms
My performance today has been erratic in the extreme. Must admit I'm learning lots tho ;) .
Look at the variance in pings to what is MTN's last server before it hit's the UK, US, or wherever.
That's a 117% difference between min and max... and 42% diff between min and average.
... the result from the other day (posted above) which was 156ms!!!
Dunno what give's however I'm not expecting >100ms for internal to SA ping. That's not right... is it? :-S
I've done and submitted a detailed diagnostic for AfriHost Critical Care. Just thought I'd share some insights with you all.
Perhaps share your pingstats to 209.212.111.203???

Trace complete.

Are you still getting feedback from the Critical Care guys? Can you drop me a PM so we can see where this query is at with them?

Youtube still giving issues......

Sorry to see that you're still battling. We've run diagnostics from our side and our international links are showing no errors.

Are you still in touch with the support team who were assisting you? Can you PM me so I can follow up with them?

Sadly, no. No-one has gotten back to me regarding the issue, except for you. Appreciate that.
There is definately some sort of balls-up somewhere with this line.

I will send you a PM tomorrow morning sometime.
