I think analogies are really a way of not addressing the issue and can ultimately get blown out of proportion. Comparing your broadband to potholes and causing deaths is definitely a stretch. Let's respect each other's right to their opinion and choices, and I expect they will do the same for you :)

Hi Afriman,

I will let you in on a little something personal. Yesterday when my speeds slowed down to 0.24Mbps as opposed to our 38Mbps usual speed I was trying to validate a payment via internet banking.

I was struggling to log on and since we had received a proof of payment I nearly sent the goods.

I then decided to tether my phone to the pc and try again.

The payment was fraudulent and the delivery address was on Louis Botha Ave.

If I had sent my colleagues there I would have been sending them directly into harms way.

They could have been killed.

I would have definitely lost tens of thousands of rand.

True story.

Hi Afriman/guy.

I am located in the East region. I have a 2Mb capped account. During the day my pings are within limits, ie. ~40ms local and ~185ms international. Tracert's are also fine and there is no exchange congestion because I get ~10ms from the 2nd hop of the test. My line stats are all fine from the router statistics.

My gripe is that after 18:00 in the evening, my international latency shoots through the roof. I can hardly play online games as the ping spikes anywhere from 400ms to 1000ms. Could you please assist in this matter as I use gaming as a stress relief mechanism :D

Thank you and have an awesome day!

I wish I could get 10mb/s :( It sux being on 4mb

My max speed was 4mbps for about a decade, recently they upgraded the exchange, so if I moved a kilometer in any direction I would get 20/40mbsp. Having 10mbps is nice, it will get to you as well soon if you live in a city. You might even get fibre if your infrastructure is too bad, Camps Bay the lines are rusting so they are replacing them with fibre. Good luck.

It certainly is a chilling story, and I am glad that no-one was hurt. But I think it is a bit of a stretch blaming Afrihost for the potentially suspicious clients that the business has or that targets your business.

Yeah I have 10mb available, but only able to sync at 6mb or the line keeps on dropping. So holding thumbs for fibre. That will be the best end result!

Morning Shaun108!

Could you possibly post a traceroute to the game server during the day, and then when the jump in latencies start happening. I will definitely need to see where the actual spikes are occurring to be able to determine the cause.

There were no network issues around the time you mentioned in the East, and the network was definitely coping with the demand levels at that time.

Hi AfriGenie,

No stretch at all actually when one considers the fact that I was just told that there is no problem on the Afrihost network:

Good day Gregory

I trust that you are well:-)

Thank you for sending this valued email. There is a status indicator on our website, and it currently shows that we are not having issues with our ADSL connection. I have attached a screen shot for further clarification.

If you are experiencing issues with your ADSL connection so we can assist you further. If there is anything else that you are unsure of , please do not hesitate to contact us if we may be of further assistance.

Thanks

Kind Regards

I am only able to look at the information that I have available, I can say with definite certainty that in the East our network was generally performing to spec last night, but that does not rule out any local issues or outages that could easily have affected the latency. The Traceroutes will help me in determining the origin of the latency, and from there we will be able to correct it if needed.

So therefore I assumed it was just a temporary glitch, I mean my speeds had dropped but even 10% of my usual speed is good enough for mission-critical functions such as internet banking.

Basically if all the support staff had received the memo or your status indicator on the website reflected the actual situation I would not have wasted my time and just switched to an alternate connection instead.

Potentially averting disaster through good communication rather than nearly walking into disaster due to misinformation.

You skirting the issue.

If you shaping P2P traffic on uncapped or "protecting" on capped, it amounts to the same thing for the consumer. Slow throughput. ie. crap download speed.

Are you not prepared to concede that?

These guys at Afrihost are trained like Special Ops military and will only give you "Name, Rank and Number".

The risk inherently involved in your business cannot be passed on as a liability to Afrihost, the Network Status is kept as up to date as possible for all regions. You were able to access the Internet Banking to verify the payment, so mentioned scenario did not come to pass fortunately.

Our Support Agents will try to provide you with the most up to date information, if there was an issue evident on your side, the trouble-shooting process needs to continue.

Hi AfriGenie,

My point is not that your organisation was liable but that clear communication would have worked well to help me the client in this case.

Speak to AfriGuy when you have a chance and get up to date on the current network issues: See Below

"Evening guys

Sorry I can't get to everyones posts.
Looks like we're seeing intermittent DNS/ connectivity issues on our end. We're investigating.

So there is DNS/Contention/Waiting for IPC/Waiting for Demand to cease or something rosier if you prefer going on.
3835899306

I have a Rock-Solid line which usually achieves 38Mbps consistently.
As demand goes up today I should see my speeds going into Free-fall.

I will keep you posted but I don't think anymore trouble shooting is necessary from my side don't you think?

Looking at these and your next post, I see latency intermittent all over the place. Does seem to be a lot worse on our network, but also over 200ms on the second hop with other ISP. Something not too right there :(

Aah, only read this now... yes, 210ms on other... also you forgot to mention zero packet loss with them and nowhere near the 710ms-1320ms+ on Afrihost's network with packet loss.

The other ISP despite having an above 200ms disaster on that hop still manages to maintain TeamViewer sessions, Citrix VPN still works, Windows updates and 8.1 apps installations can still be successful and somehow stream Youtube in 720p as well as FTP and torrents also still working.

Amazing that.

Immanent... contended... optimized. <--- should be Afrihost slogan, not Pure Internet Joy.

I try my best to ensure I am up to date with our current network issue, the specific issue AfriGuy highlighted was resolved within a short space of time, I didn't want to presume that your issue occurred during that specific time frame. :erm:

If you experience any unexpected problems or issues, please let us know, we're here to help you fix any problems, and get you running as well as possible.

I did acknowledge that it seemed to worse on our network, but there were definitely issues with both results as I interpreted them :(

Hi AfriGenie,

Speeds are already crashing due to contention, http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3835946139

I don't think that your DNS/Contention/Waiting for IPC/Waiting for Demand to cease or something rosier if you prefer is improving any time soon.

Here is a post that should bring you onto the same page:
At the moment, we are seeing increased demand in all regions (North, South & East) of our DSL network. We have partially addressed these issues by upgrading software on our shaping management system and making changes to optimize how we manage traffic on the network. This mostly entails ensuring that we catch shaped services more efficiently and shape them to the correct extent, which leaves more available bandwidth for priority realtime services.

Some clients may experience torrents and other P2P services running slow than usual while general speeds are normal or close to normal. This is due to demand on the network and we are trying to provide the best possible experience during periods of high demand.

Some clients may also want to know when we are upgrading our network or additional IPC. It’s important that clients understand that network upgrades and increased demand are a normal function of running a national network and this is something that is monitored on an ongoing basis and we do ongoing capacity planning to ensure that we have adequate capacity to provide clients with the value they pay for. Occasionally, there are unprecedented spikes in demands and changes in user behavior that cause these plans to be reviewed and possibly adjusted. However, while we do adjust these plans from time to time based on our realtime reports, we also continually make sure that we optimize our network for the best performance with current resources at all times, as the clients day to day experience is the most important thing, and upgrading our network is a long term solution that can take weeks or months to take effect, based on availability and negotiations with our upstream suppliers like Telkom and MTN.
