Is anyone else in Cape Town having issues? Youtube vids are doing a ground breaking 30 - 60 kB/s and even myBB forums are only loading at 170 kB/s on my 10mb line.

CPT seems to be affected by a Telkom outage of sorts, the exact details are a little sketchy at this stage.

I think they rediscovered that the Cape Town network was held together with paperclips and electron dense toast.

Anyway thanks for the info. Now we play the waiting game.

Do a "tracert" to telkom.co.za - they have a problem in CPT for sure.

I dunno if AfriGuy or AfriGenie have already let you guys know about this. But just in case :)

http://answers.afrihost.com

This is an awesome way to post questions or queries, and we're hoping that the answers can help someone in a similar position.

We're also already giving away prizes for answers that get mass votes and for the most active participants on the site (and we're planning to make the prizes bigger and better). Might be fun and interesting to the technically minded people here on MyBB.

Awesomesauce! :)

Hi AfriMan

Today, my father moved to a 10Mbps AfriHost capped account and the overall response is not what is expected.
The speedtest latencies were quite high, so I did a traceroute to afrihost.com and facebook.com:

I connected with my MWEB uncapped account and got the following results for the same traceroutes:
MWEB tracert.png

How come the AfriHost capped account has significantly slower response times than the uncapped MWEB account, shouldn't this be the other way round?

That latency is definitely worrisome, from those results that you have posted though, it does look like either a line fault or a fault at the Exchange. The second hop is basically the connection between your ADSL modem and the Telkom Exchange. How long were you able to test with the MWeb account? With past Exchange issues that I have worked on, it does usually take about 20 minutes for a new connection to deteriorate as you are seeing with the Capped account.

Are you seeing these results at all times of the day? Or only during a specific period?

I reconnected the AfriHost account and the latency does seem alot better. Should the connection keep on deteriorating, what should we do?

BTW: Thanks for the quick response!

The latency definitely should not deteriorate at all, it is definitely not normal. But if there is an issue on your line or at the Exchange, you do not receive consistent readings by switching to a different account and then immediately running tests with it. By switching accounts you are refreshing your connection, which can improve things temporarily, using it for about 20 minutes before testing should reveal any issues on the line or exchange.
