Midnight Resets

Hi Afriman, As promised the Midnight Reset:

12PM Logout.jpg

It occurred at exactly Midnight our time, the use Graph shows that all traffic stopped, the time above is US West Coast, we are 10 Hours ahead ( it is 2 min past because I wanted to capture post event on the use graph), and the Simulation error message says I was logged out and points to the Internet connection as the fault.

This happens every evening, not every 3rd, and it also affects any download in progress or an running stream.

Hope it helps.

Classic Afrihost. I just want to watch Twitch. Why can't I watch Twitch? Why do I have to use a third party application instead of watching it from my browser?

Classic Afrihost. I just want to watch Twitch. Why can't I watch Twitch? Why do I have to use a third party application instead of watching it from my browser?

Yeah it sucks, but again for me personally AH has always sucked at streaming so I'm not holding my breath they'll fix it. I'm just glad Tardsplaya exists so that I can actually use twitch.

Also experiencing more than usual buffering on youtube and twitch the past few days.

There are some issues with Youtube at the moment, but you should definitely not be seeing such significant drop in your speeds. Are your speeds continuously that low? Or is this only during certain times of the day?

Yes my speeds are always that low - although to be fair "that low" of 1289 kbps (161.1 KB/sec transfer rate) is one of the highest i've had in recent tests.

I'll pm my details - look though some of my clientzone support tickets and you'll see what i'm talking about.

If it were only youtube i'd understand - gaming is equally terrible with pings into the thousands. Worst of all though is that the 1gig free from webafrica is finished so I'm stuck with Afrihost.

I'm using Afrihost's DNS servers only:
196.7.7.7
196.7.8.9

It's still doing it, btw.

Does anything change if you switch DNS providers? It may change which cached servers you access.

My youtube tests yesterday were pretty solid. I wasn't paying much attention to technical detail but generally streaming on 480p and 720p we smooth and worked as expected all day.

I'm pretty sure this isn't happening on our side, but I'll check. Perhaps certain services are affected by the session refresh, but to my understanding they should not be :(

Can you please PM me your username so I can check your logs?

I'm concerned that your ping to local router is much higher than it should be. It could mean there is local contention on your network (perhaps a download in the background or an update) which is affecting internet performance.

That's definitely not cool. AfriGenie is on leave right now, so please send through to me so I can make sure our guys are on this :(

No, I've just tried using IS, MWEB and Google DNS and I still get the same result. I am flushing my DNS cache before I test with a new server, just in case you're wondering.

EDIT: Google services are very slow this morning and it takes anywhere from 5 - 10 seconds to load www.google.co.za and to do a google search. Google instant and search suggestions aren't working either.

Youtube videos take about 10 seconds to start and are 240p by default. If I change to 360p then they buffer a bit at the start, but then play as normal.

By comparison, yahoo.com is must faster, search suggestions are working and the SERP page take less than a second to display

Maybe YouTube is iffy. Could be with schools out and holidays around the world, they're busier than usual. We'll test on our side as well and see what we can see :(

Yeah, but the problem is that I'm not being routed to the local CDN and it looks like I'm not the only one: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/649520-Afrihost-Business-Uncapped-Feedback-2?p=14198195&viewfull=1#post14198195

How is second life? Is that not like a ridiculously addictive virtual personality game thing that I read about so many years ago like people got so caught up and forgot how to even reality.

I experienced it too. exactly at 12, and then again at around 1:50am.
between the two outages browsing slowed to a crawl and some pages wouldn’t even load.

Usually I am sleeping around 12 so never see it happen. but the nights that i do stay up late. 12am always seems like there is a reset of some kind.

We'll have to run some tests on our side to recreate this. If you could please PM me with your user details, we may need to contact you to test for us on your specific line, router, etc.

How is second life? Is that not like a ridiculously addictive virtual personality game thing that I read about so many years ago like people got so caught up and forgot how to even reality.

It can be like that yes :)

I think it depends on the personality, it can be addictive and a lot of people use it as a dating service, I know several people now who met in SL and got married in RL, often having to move to Europe or America to do so.
Personally I am into it for the Live Music Sessions, there are some great indie musicians in there and I also used to do a lot of scripting and building, it has a thriving economy but it is difficult to get the cash out in South Africa.
