For me its bye bye Afrihost ...as of today im back on SAIX ... Let me know when MTN can provide what we need and Ill try again :wtf:

I'm also keen to dump Afrihost after being with them for years. I'm sick of this cr@p up & down speeds I'm getting.
Who are good alternatives?

I presume you did PM Afriman with your details right?!

Mate I was very happy with Afrihost and If they sort it out, I may be back ..... But for now im on Openweb and its only been for 2 days but it seems to perform as well as Afrihost when they were with IS so maybe give it a bash for a trial and nothing stopping you going back when Afrihost get there act together

Up and down today. We're also looking to for an alternative ...

Afriman - with very poor performance so far for us in CT, and by your admission, the network still needing to 'learn' and 'adjust' going forward - do you think it's fair to make us wait a month to get away from Afrihost, while paying full subscription for that month? So you get to say "users won't get the performance we've sold them" and "we get to charge the full rate as though they are". I'd like to get out asap. Many, many blackouts over the last few days, 10-30min slots where we can't get any traffic through. Not viable as an ISP product in this day and age...

It is really crap, luckily I already cancelled end of last month. Can't wait to get my speed and ping back :)

I am on an After Hours uncapped account from Axxess (sharing same MTN network from Afrihost) in CPT and sync at 6Mb/s

No improvement on my front with international connectivity, IS is performing much much better, but I've noticed I get a pretty good rate to certain CDNs with Afrihost (mostly ones Google has a presence at), and Afrihost's prices compare favourably.

So, I'm back to routing over either IS or MTN depending on the destination. Hello again, 2005.

Just bought a small Capped Unshaped from OpenWeb as a trial. Working good and gain the 40-50ms latency that we lost with MTN since they won't switch on CPT IPC. So will cancel Afrihost at the end of the month and move to OpenWeb unless by then CPT IPC is ON!

OTHER OPTIONS FOR UNHAPPY USERS

Unfortunately I've had to cut ties. As much as I appreciate Afrihost trying to better their infrastructure, they have done so in a way which harms their users and even though they have admitted as much by looking to put in IPCs, nobody had had the balls to apologize for the bugger up. In a couple of months, more likely half a year, they could be stable again, but for the moment there are other ISPs offering the same packages, at the same prices, with the same services, at the same contention ratio.

For those who are concerned about stability, speed and latency, I've moved across onto a Openweb Budget Unshaped account. After trialing with Cybersmart, Web Africa and other Openweb options, this has proved to be the best value for money option.

I'm back to 180ms international ping and 17ms local ping. Speeds seem to come in at 3.9mpbs at 7pm on a 4mbps line. I've also tested on the Openweb Gold account, this gives me pretty much perfect speed and the latency max 5ms better.

Web Africa performs about the same, but the same priced option is on a prioritized line. Gaming, P2P and FTP never feature at a top priority.

i've also given up.

in cape town, capped afrihost is useless. i switched over to my saix account and it flies. even local is crappy and send/receive errors on email.

afrihost's mtn network just plain sucks. the service is cheap but you seem to get what you pay for.

Hi there

First of all let me say that if our ADSL network move has in anyway affected the performance of your ADSL account with us negatively please accept my sincere apologies - It is our top priority to sort out any issues ASAP.

As you know all of our ADSL clients have been on the new network built for us by MTN since the 1st of November.

It was obviously a massive undertaking and there have been teething problems.

Unfortunately there are still some issues that are affecting a percentage of our clients and I promise you that it is our top priority to resolve these.

Afrihost, Axxess and MTN's tech teams are working (literally) night and day to get all the kinks sorted out 100%.

Before we get onto the problems here are some interesting stats since the move:

The overall capacity of IPC we have available to us now as compared to when we were on the IS network is significantly higher.

While we didn't know exactly how many Gbps of IPC our (Afrihost and Axxess) clients were using on the IS network (since they managed the network), we do know this:

We are currently delivering 38.27% MORE GBs on average every day to our clients on the new network than we were a month ago.

Here are the problems we are having and how we are sorting them out:

1. Average latency in Cape Town has increased marginally (by about 50ms) as we don't have a Cape Town IPC yet. However, we will be getting an IPC in Cape Town early in the new year which should remedy this.

2. The biggest challenge we've been having is with our home or consumer Uncapped product. We are trying to ensure the best possible experience for each uncapped client - for this reason we do not want to throttle our users in any way. Instead we are focusing on prioritising protocols: We aim to give higher priority to real time actions (such as surfing, email, Youtube etc) and deprioritise non-realtime actions (such as torrenting) during peak hours when the network is at its busiest.

However, at times the protocol prioritisation has not always worked as planned which has led to intermittent congestion of the network and spikes in latency.

However, I am confident that within the next day we will have solved this challenge and our user experience should be excellent again.

The Bottom Line is:

We desperately want to make your experience amazing - If you have not been happy with your ADSL connection's performance I encourage you to PM Afriman or email him at [email protected] with feedback and we'll do our best to help!

Hope this clears things up.

Thanks and keep well

Gian

Hello. I was wondering, will I, who have a 10mb capped account, also be throttled during the evenings when I download my series? Thank you!

Only the heaviest users will have their downloads managed, the light users are going to get full throughput (or as the network and their ADSL lines allow)

I was thinking you mean Once Upon a Time - but just so as not to appear sexist, Are you watching the Walking Dead?

I've been with Afrihost for a couple of years now, 2 accounts, moved my Telkom line to them as well and recommended AH to all my friends always had good speed/downloads etc. Since move to MTN speed down 30%...slow access etc etc.
Numerous tickets to support and Afriman...old story Telkom exchange congestion...Telkom problem not ours...
I've now bought couple of prepaid gigs from Plugg to try out whom I believe are on IS network...
WOW what a difference!!!!

Ok great, thank you :) That is good to hear, as I only download like one episode or so per night when they come out. No, not Walking dead, but series like Arrow, Person of Interest, CSI, Revenge :)

I would just like to say something here. I do not usually say anything and give ISP's the chance to sort themselves out, but I was very impressed with Afrihost. I have tried numerous providers and Afrihost was (take note was) by far superior to any others. I am a gamer and it was absolutely the best ISP I have used for gaming. I also do a lot of work on line and I am very, very, very disappointed.

The MTN move has been awful. Lost packets ever since the move and since yesterday it has been absolutely unusable. Yes, I understand that perhaps there is too much traffic, but when someone provides excellent service and goes from excellent to unusable it is not good, not good at all.

I for one do not know why you made the move to MTN, but if it was a case of needing to make more money, I would have happily paid more for the brilliant service that afrihost offered through IS's network. Unfortunately I have now switched to another provider to try it out and it is working brilliantly. If this is not sorted out by the end of the month (and I have my doubts that it will be sorted, as I am not sure MTN can handle afrihosts client load), I will be cancelling afrihost and switching to another provider permanently.

Well said "tracee" could not agree with you more! Also currently trying out another provider...wow what a difference.
Surely AH / MTN could have sorted out their problems by now...

Yip, moving to openweb or webafrica again. Just testing their trial accounts to see which one is better.

Today's international Speed test results. Not good!
Test conducted on 08 November 2012 10:19:46

Download Speed: 1220 kbps (152.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 367 kbps (45.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Latency: 296 ms

Peter

Capped clients experiencing slow throughput - A quick reboot of your router will solve this, so please do this ASAP :)
