Trace complete.

We investigated a few complaints on slow speeds and latency in the Cape Town area. Due to having no shaping at all on Uncapped products, we hit our max and we've now implemented some light shaping to bring performance back in line. We promised a week of no shaping, and we've kept it going for just on two weeks now!

Performance should already be back to normal, and we'll be monitoring closely to ensure that Capped ADSL continues to perform at premium levels at all hours.

Looks like your line is trying to sync at a full 10Mbps, but can only achieve just under 7mbps. If you're pushing a lot of data, you'll start experiencing latency and packet loss, and your speeds will be very intermittent. I would recommend lowering the sync rate to 6Mbps (to be safe) or possibly 7Mbps, and then getting Telkom to look into improving the sync rate by checking cables, port on the exchange, etc.

Drop me a PM and we'll look into it :)

I hope the shaping goody will be switched off at 6 PM or before and not midnight like in the past. Don't forget tomorrow is a Paid Public Holiday therefore no shaping!

.

Im Glad to report,

I've had no latecy issues at all...

Everything is back to normal

:-D

I'm using a 2mb line and I topped up my Afrihost free account so I could finish my download from Origin at a faster speed.

I'm now getting 65kb/s whereas on MWEB even with the Seacom break I was getting full line speed.

WTF is this.

EDIT: Ah just as I pressed post it went up to line speed. LOL

And broken again as of this morning; according to Afrihost's site, the Cape Town IPC is down.

Sorry, but I'm now convinced that Afrihost just can't run a reliable network.

And of course, on the 27th, so I have to put up with another month of this.

IPC is a telkom product, not an afrihost product.

Hello, IPC is telkom product, not Afrihost!
Be careful to throw blame if you dont fully understand how things work.

Hey Guys

We're truly sorry about the issues in Cape Town this morning. As some people have pointed out, the IPC belongs to Telkom, so we have very little influence over technical or hardware issues. We are however making every effort to make sure that everything on our side is squeaky clean so that we avoid any outages in future.

I also saw that some other ISP's with Cape Town IPC were affected, so we're not sure if there was much we could have done, other than rerouting traffic. We're still waiting for a full incident report :(

No, actually you (and it seems the whole of Afrihost) still don't seem to "get it":

1. I pay Afrihost, not Telkom. The "product" I buy is yours. Whatever of Telkom's infrastructure you chose to use, that's STILL YOUR PROBLEM. Up until end Feb, you were running without using a Cape Town IPC, so you can't even claim that this is something you have to use.

2. When I switched to my WebAfrica account, it worked fine. So claiming that other ISPs have the same problem......well, I can't test all of them, but at least one seems to be able to work round Telkom's issues rather than just having the whole network fall over.

3. Afrihost's performance since December has been just abysmal. In this entire period, I've had about three weeks of the performance I'm paying for (second week of this month till now).

Take some responsibility, man!!!

I dont have a picture for a FACEPALM - so....

As for Afirhost's performance, it been better than IS for the last month since the IPC upgrade.
Telkom having issues, is Afrihosts problem and other ISPs problem, you are right, and they did their best to get Telkom to solve the issues in a very short time. Having said this however, Telkom does make mistakes/have issues that affect us and causes downtime for us, this is NOT Afrihosts fault.

We can however be dang sure Afrihost WILL sort the issues out very quickly.

If you have found that your account was/is running sub-standard, PM AfriMan with your details so that they can sort out the issue(s) you are having.

Count to 10 and PM AfriMan if you have not done so already :)

AfriHost's status page shows the Cape Town problem as resolved as of 10am:

"UPDATE 27 March 2013 10:00am Telkom and MTN have restored full connectivity and are monitoring the IPC to ensure that it remains stable. At present we do not have a full incident report on the cause of the problem, but reports are that several other ISP’s with Cape Town IPC were also affected. We will ensure we implement any measures on our side to prevent reoccurrence. We thank all affected clients for their patience and understanding."

Here's reality - tests on South African Broadband Speed test taken four minutes apart at 8pm:

Afrihost:

Test conducted on March 27, 2013 8:00:38 PM GMT+02:00

Download Speed: 141 kbps (17.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 291 kbps (36.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 437 ms

WebAfrica:

Test conducted on March 27, 2013 8:04:49 PM GMT+02:00

Download Speed: 3470 kbps (433.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 424 kbps (53 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 51 ms

Both capped accounts, obviously. Draw your own conclusions.

You are correct, at the end of the day it's our responsibility to get you connected, though we are extremely limited in the infrastructure we can choose from. Ultimately Telkom is the only broadband infrastructure in the country and we rely on them for service delivery. When their systems fail, it's our job to put pressure on them to fix it, which I assure you we are doing.

Thanks for the post :)

For those still interested, as of this morning, performance is back to where was prior to the Cape Town issues on the Afrihost account. :wtf:

Afriman, I will send a PM later tonight or tomorrow. But it has been syncing at 7008kbps for the last week and a half, no faster than that.

Time to kick Telkom techs in the nether regions:twisted:

It looks like my New Client Zone has stopped updating the amount of bytes used ........... Now has it stopped completely or only in the client zone?

You guys all noticed you are getting double the cap for the next 3 months?

You guys all noticed you are getting double the cap for the next 3 months?

Indeed :) Just signed up with Afrihost because of this promotion, gone for 10GB + 10GB on my 10Mb line. Looking forward to the first of the month tomorrow to try it out. I wonder if they'll drop the "double up" at the end of July. Read they'll review the promotion again at that time. Here's hoping they keep it going indefinitely and this becomes their new pricing structure, not just a promotion.
