Your exchange looks to the problem here. How often are you having latency issues?

Every evening, but what's strange is that it suddenly corrects itself. It will lag at +200 and then correct itself to 20ms. I would expect an exchange problem to gradually improve as demand becomes less. Or does everyone stop using the net at the same time? Or am I missing something else here? Also why the jump on the second hop?

It really depends on what is causing the issue. Latency on the second hop usually indicates an issue on the exchange but it's not always the case. The second hop is the "doorway" of the ISP network, while the first is your DSL router. So there is quite a lot happening in between. You Router - Distribution Point - DSLAM - Telkom Network - Arrive at ISP Network. It could really be on any of these networks. So if your neighbour turns his sprinkler on at 5pm until 7pm and latencies and packet loss go insane during that time, it could be a copper issue on your property.

Thanks for the explanation. Is there a way to test the copper between the house and the exchange?

I think only Telkom have those statistics. We don't really have access to those diagnostics :(

Excuse my ignorance, but if there's a copper fault won't the lag always be evident? This seems to be an exchange problem after 4pm. Will Telkom admit to an exchange problem or congestion?

It depends on the nature of the fault. If it's on the cable itself, like degraded copper, then it would usually be consistent, though environment factors like heat and moisture could also make things worse at time. If it's induced interference, like an electric fence or electromagnetic fields generated by something, that is very difficult to trace and diagnose.

BUt congestion is about 90% of these scenarios, and the rest is much rarer.

Hi,

How is streaming (Netflix) on these accounts? Specifically the 4mb/100gb bundle.
Currently with Mweb.

Hi,

Currently with Mweb.

I'm on 20mb VDSL. With a Capped Afrihost account any streaming video service netflix, hulu, youtube... buffers like crazy and quality is poor. The moment I change to a capped Webafrica or Openweb account even axxess I can stream full HD without a hint of buffering.

So my conclusion is Afrihost capped accounts are either not fully unshaped or this MTN switch really degraded their bandwidth quality

Could you drop me a PM with your details so I can check this out for you?

Anyone having issues accessing dotcom sites. Mines just dont load and I get this error:

"The server at www.bbc.co.uk can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed. DNS is the network service that translates a website's name to its Internet address. This error is most often caused by having no connection to the Internet or a misconfigured network. It can also be caused by an unresponsive DNS server or a firewall preventing Google Chrome from accessing the network."

Yet it was all working an hour ago.

MYbb works fine.

Hi guys

Sorry about the issues here, looks like we're experiencing some issues with our DNS servers. Google DNS will work though. I'll post some feedback as soon as it lands on my desk :)

OpenDNS will also work.

Our team are working hard to have this sorted out quickly.

I was also experiencing a DNS issue. This post confirmed my suspicions....

We're sincerely sorry about this :(
Our team are working on this to have the DNS issues resolved as soon as possible.
