Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Then is is rather convenient for AH that the problems only really start after your so called 24 Hour support has shut down for the night and anyone who is not tech savy enough to find alternate methods to report the issue just get a recording to say call in Office Hours.

By the next morning all is well and they feel embarrassed to report it as the Help desk will test a perfectly good line and say no problems, ticket resolved.

MBB is the only place that us technical users, most of whom have both the resources and knowledge to confirm line faults and ISP issues, have left resort too.

Your Help Desk probably have their performance appraisals on number of tickets closed, rather than number of issues actually resolved and no doubt a red indication on the Status page reflects badly on the network guys at appraisal time.

You may not be using it intentionally as a marketing tool but then again you don't appear to be using it at all.

I think you're trying to imply a level of collusion or conspiracy that's a bit far fetched. Yes, I do agree that the reports here are concerning and we're looking into them. But if you look at the number of people complaining, versus the number of Business users and overall ADSL users, it's very small. It's really a management decision to determine whether this is going to be useful.

We do post statuses when we encounter issues with significant impact that we feel warrants a notice. I'm not saying that issue we're talking about here doesn't but that hasn't been established yet in terms of the number of affected clients and the extent to which they are affected.

All looks pretty normal, so I'm guessing it's throughput that is poor :(

Yeah, I've sent you a PM. Clearly my line is being shaped/throttled/incorrectly allocated to an uncapped profile.

I pulled a fair amount of data over the weekend and then performance dropped substantially and has been ever since. It's a capped, unshaped account but exhibits characteristics of an abused uncapped account being managed...

Correct me if I am wrong...

Sorry but I agree. There is clearly an issue, as many technical folk at MyBB pointed out and that even AH itself has admitted. Saying the network is perfectly fine is just not true, even if it is just a small proportion of users (and you don't know if it's only a small proportion, do you?)

So far the majority of these reports are from MyBB and we are openly discussing this here. I think that acknowledges an issue which so far has been raised here. As I've said, if we saw the same level of reports on other channels, but especially from support requests, citing similar symptoms in rapid succession, it would be a difference scenario.

If you are on Capped then there can't be any shaping, as there is no ruleset to engage or activate shaping. I can check your profile to confirm, in case you recently upgraded or something like this. But if not I'm fairly confident you are not shaped in any way.

90% of your users wouldn't know or care if your network was running at 10%-20% of max speed though.

The tech savvy and heavy loaders on myBB know and care cause we watching closely!!!!

That high ping to the 3rd hop (would usually be the 2nd hop for most) is to Telkom's infrastructure, so it suggests the exchange could be congested or not performing as it should. A 1000ms+ response is very concerning.

But why am I getting almost full speeds on WA tho?

Many of our clients are tech savvy, but may not choose to engage over forums. When I've filled in for the Twitter and Facebook peeps in the past, many clients are developers, web designers and have a technical background. I wouldn't make that assumption.

It's interesting, because the hop we're talking about is not on our network. This test does show higher latency within our network, but should not be terrible enough to make performance as poor as what you've seen from earlier tests.

Many of our clients are tech savvy, but may not choose to engage over forums. When I've filled in for the Twitter and Facebook peeps in the past, many clients are developers, web designers and have a technical background. I wouldn't make that assumption.

I didn't say the remaining 10% were myBB forumites. I said 90% of your client base probably doesn't care or know.

When you test with the WA account, do you by any chance dial it up in bridged mode - or do you change it on the router itself?

I still think it's a big generalisation. If you look at the demographic of our client base, purely in terms of gender and age, our clients are mostly from a tech savvy slice of the population.

Your end latency seems pretty OK, but definitely not the throughput we'd like to see. Our team are making changes where they can and there has already been some improvement. I think we can expect more improvement as they continue to work on this.

I think you're trying to imply a level of collusion or conspiracy that's a bit far fetched.

It is neither a Conspiracy Theory or suggestion of collusion, it is a statement of fact.

If the problems only occur at a time the general public can not report them, but your network status reflects only calls to the help desk during business hours, then the Status tool is useless.

AfriMan said:
We do post statuses when we encounter issues with significant impact that we feel warrants a notice.

And therein lays the second half of the problem.
If the Status tool is not dynamic how can it be trusted?
If it takes a Management decision to downgrade the status then who upgrades it again?

When the new IPC went live the page switched to green before it was even reported that the IPC was in place, or any testing had been performed by the effected customers, the result is a green Status yet we are all still experiencing the same problem.

The reason I am going on about this is because I have struggled with a useless connection, after hours, for over six months. BECAUSE, I trusted your status tool that reported no issues.

It cost me a new router, several Telkom Callout fees (Your Help Desk constantly said I am the only person in Cape Town with a problem so It must be a Telkom Issue) and finally a duplication in ISP costs as I had to purchase a Telkom account to convince Telkom it was NOT an Afrihost issue. That left me with a lot of egg on my face.

Out of pocket by several thousand rand, and having falsely accused Telkom, I found the MBB forum Thread and discovered that I am not alone and that AH is in denial.

Thank you for stating that your Status Tool is not dynamic, at least others may be saved the expense of trusting it in future.

Since Afrihost had their "Congestion" issues, I've called many times to find out why I'm only getting around 2.7 Mbps on my 4Mbps line but every time I get a different story. From IOS updates killing the network to Telkom problems to whatever the Afrihost agent says. Today I get a 80/20 % crap .... I can only ever get 80% of 4Mbps because the other 20% is used for download???

When is Afrihost going to sort this out???

I think in the context of mybroadband, we're investigating the reports here. It depends on the impact assessed by management from support tickets, complaints, social media and other feedback like network reports, etc. I don't think we can force the status based solely on MyBB feedback, but I do think we need to keep investigating what is reported here on MyBB.

You have been investigating for a while now and I'd like to see results.

Don't they mean overhead? Because that is roughly true, except it's not 20%. On a 4mbps line you'll get 3.7mbps or so, the rest going to line overhead.
