AfriMeeples - I wonder if AfriGinie is a BoardgameGeek too ..........

Come to think of it, how about AfriGeeks ?

I am a huge Boardgamer actually, and a big user of BoardgameGeek, I'm just amazed at the small details you guys keep picking up.

I do actually like AfriGeeks as well.

My latency is finally decreasing during the day, speed is OK. I went to my exchange and a Telkom representative said he checked my connection on the DSLAM apparently the latency on my connection spikes between the MTN authentication protocol. Is the DSL and mobile connections(voice) on the MTN network running trough the same pipe?

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3918437931

Eventually the Mobile Data and ADSL data do connect to the same network, but authentications and the actual local bandwidth pipes for each services are completely separate and standalone. The ADSL primarily runs off of the Telkom infrastructure and the Mobile Data off of the Cellular Tower Infrastructure.

Regards to the pm @ afrigeni

That was my worry, that despite what Telkom said to you on multiple instances that VDSL with 40Mbps may not be available or have enough ports left.

Now that you are on 20Mbps, I am going to see if I can manually process your order through Telkom - instead of using the Client Interface - and get you to 40Mbps.

Just keep me updated please don't want to go through this whole unpleasant thing again.

(Fyi, called telkom again today to confirm one last time and again they reassured me I can take 40mbps.)

Just checking but you do know that you're syncing on 20Mbps ADSL2+ and not VDSL? It's also why you have a 1Mbps upload sync and not 2Mbps.

Yup, Thor187 did point that out to me in his PM :)

I am now trying to get him switched to 40Mbps VDSL.

That is indeed what I pointed out in my PM to Afrigenie, I just wasn't able to send a picture using the mobile app. So send it in the thread and said regards to PM.

Ah good! I went through a similar process as Thor getting Telkom to actually sync me on VDSL, although it wasn't quite as bad as Thor's ordeal. Glad you picked up on that :)

I must admit their was some screw up from my side initially transferring the line incorrectly or something I'm not really aware of what I did wrong, but I think that somehow messed up a few things from the start.

But this time round things seems to go through a bit faster and better.

Generally we recommend completing the transfer of an ADSL line at the current speed profile, then once it is with us, upgrading it to your desired speed.

The Telkom system does not cope all that well with simultaneous migrations and regrades.

In hindsight that makes sense, but "generally" was not told or shown to me on the website, of course in future I know, but I perceived the steps explained on the site very differently than what was "generally" meant.

Anyway lets hope it wil be 40 soon.

so then why is the streaming so bad when the speed-test show everything is fine? Is it because certain protocols are shaped or managed more than others? I thought streaming was a real-time service?

I've come to the conclusion that there is some kind of restriction being placed on international bandwidth. It's not a hard number but a percentage of your line speed, a very low percentage. For me I have a 10mb sync line that only does ~200 kB/s to twitch.

It doesn't affect youtube so much because of local caching. Which is why if you watch an unpopular/obscure video on youtube the first time you try stream it you get very very very bad quality, because you're trying to get it internationally. If you click refresh magically you'll get your line speed on the same video because now you're getting it from the locally cached server. Twitch however has no local cache server and so you'll never get good quality out of it unless you use a third party app (thanks i got issues :D)

I'm not sure if AH know about it and are doing nothing or if their international provider is doing it without them knowing but I'm going to keep bringing this issue up until they fix it. I like using twitch and I'm sick of watching in low quality when I know my line can do 1080p.

Twitch.tv has been problematic for some time, as have a few other streaming services, that was partly why the update was pushed through last weekend.

Is there any noticeable different in streaming speed between your PC and the Twitch.tv App on a mobile device?

I haven't actually tried my phone. I'd prefer to use my larger pc screen but I'll try it tonight.

If it was the management software why has the issue not been resolved with the update?

My line is perfect PLEASE DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING ON MY ACCOUNT.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 1737 kbps (217.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 388 kbps (48.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 28 ms

That's exactly why a few people haven't had more than a few hours over the past week, updates that should be working are not resolving the issue as it stands.
