Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Is afrihost shaping capped account on p2p?? under 20kb/s down speed. Yet full speed on normal downloads and streaming. Very fishy

We definitely don't shape capped. Our shaping (on Uncapped accounts) affects P2P and downloads in any case, so that definitely rules out any possibility of shaping.

It is possible that our current demand (during peak) could be worsening the latency, but from the alternative ISP test you ran there is certainly latency on your line either way.

Remember that it's not our rules affecting capped users, but the overall increase in demand. We're trying to implement rules to shape rogue P2P traffic on Uncapped accounts, but we're not using shaping rules to affect Capped users in any way.

My problem is throughout the whole day, from 8PM where all my downloads are affected! Said that multiple times here already so stop referring it to only "peak periods"

I don't think that's the case, if you go back through the threads they were pretty much silent for 3-4 months when everything was working like a bomb. The current issue we're seeing now is not a lack of capacity (as I've been told) but due to traffic management, which is a far more complex issue to work out due to the inter-dependancies on a network this size and the volume of policies and rules within the system, not to mention the complexities of customising each region for the usage trends specific to that sub-network (for the best experience).

Which 3 - 4 months would these be?

So streaming, YouTube, browsing, online gaming etc all work at full line speed of 8Mbps but downloads won't go past 30KB no matter what I do and & you expect me to believe it's due to contention.

Bullsht...

I can only confirm that we definitely don't have shaping rule in place. How performance pans out is dependant on many factors.

Well can someone see to my account and fix those "factors" that won't let me download anything past 30KB/s!! Is that not what support is for?

Go back to December/January, some threads had no comments for several days.

Maybe because majority of the country were on leave and travel away from their homes.

You guys seriously need to get your heads out of your asses and fix the clear massive problems before you find yourselves with no clients.

Perhaps because people were away on leave? Holidays?

The latency/ packet loss issues have been prevalent since Late January Early February. Same goes for the streaming issues with Twitch etc. Netflix/ Hulu is a huge issue too. And add to that p2p taking strain, the list is growing longer.

If you read on past Jan into Feb and early March, there were still very few issues reported, so it was not just a holiday thing. Since we had major upgrades to capacity late last year, we had very few DSL related complaints (on MyBB, social media and at our support centre) for several months prior to the symptoms we've seen in the last few weeks.

Those factors are contention, as I've been explaing, and the various artefacts of increased demand on the network, which we are addressing. If you're expecting a flick of a switch, I don't think I can promise that. It's an ongoing process and I think we've definitely already seen a decrease in latency at peak periods and overall improvement for most gaming titles (especially in terms of packet loss and using Teamspeak while gaming, etc). We'll continue to work on this until we believe the network is performing at the best possible levels.

Sorry last few weeks? These issues have been going on since Feb. That is more than a few weeks. Things went from bad to worse, and that is why I cancelled my account for end April. The whole reason i took the capped account was to avoid issues like poor p2p performance and issues with streaming etc. But as mentioned since Feb it has just been on a steady decline.

I definitely don't think this has been going on since Feb. But I don't think that worth debating. But at the end of the day when we noticed that there was an issue with performance not being what it should we started taking steps to improve and identify the cause of the problem.

This is frustrating beyond belief.
Telkom has sorted out their side of my problem, so what now??

I was under the impression that your ISP is one of those things you just forget about, you pay them accordingly and you get the service accordingly, supposed to just work, everyone happy. Instead you find yourself sitting with a service that doesn't work as it should, using your own time to post here and the like and yet you still pay accordingly.

And that contention just happens to stop like someone flicking a switch at 11PM every night to the second.

I am having some minor issues with my main account, so I switched over to my Afrihost backup account for international gaming, only to discover even worse packet loss problems...

Websites seem to be okish, but i sent a PM to Afriguy on the 20th regarding packet loss issues I have been having in the evening. Was consistently happening every evening. Have not heard anything from him since.

That's a post from 20th of Feb regarding packet loss issues. page 645 of the threads. But you are right, no worth debating.

Contention where MTN or Telkom? Demand on the network where MTN or Telkom?

If it was Telkom related then wouldn't everyone be affected? At work ATM i cant youtube, download drivers or even install chrome on a pc, but yet I can download from mega at full speed. (Afrihost uncapped) At home i can sort of youtube donwload drivers but not login to D3 (Afrihost Capped), but now repeating myself again switch over to Webafrica free account & i can haz all the youtube download & D3 logins as I want(until my 1GB free is up) explain to me then as I must be thick for not understanding yet, how does MTN not work but an IS account work?
