Afrihost CAPPED ADSL Feedback (MTN)

Everything absolutely flies during business hours but a total schlep from 18:00 to about 23:00
My torrents running almost like I have a 3mb line +- 260+kB/s and I can comfortably stream SD youtube content WHILST downloading

2mb line Cape Town but then the fun begins after 6 tonight:confused:

How the hell does Axxess score so high? they have similar issues to Afrihost

They're obviously doing some things better than us with the same resources, so all credit to them. Remember that they have won ISP of the Year before, so they do have a few aces up their sleeves.

But we'll definitely be coming up with some new ideas and strategies to bring more value to our clients in every way we can.

I've posted results twice, including this one.
So the latency is lacking on the 3rd hop across the board (worse on AH) - What about the rest of the hops? It's clear as day that the WA account is performing much better than the AH account

So, if I reboot my router before the AH test and before the WA test and the results are the same - This would mean that the WA account is still by far outperforming the AH account, correct? What then?
Even with my limited knowledge, it's beyond me how you can shrug it off by picking out 1 slightly high latency ping in a series of 42 pings whereas the AH account's latency is through the roof on most of the pings. (Each line in a hop in a trace route represents a ping, right?)

It's true, each value is an independant ping, but you get anomalies and you get noticeable trends, and in your previous post there was definitely a trend between both accounts, not as noticeable in this post. So I agree that it is not as noticeable, but the trend shows that the cause is not likely to be specific to the ISP account. It could be that the original cause is made worse because we do see high demand on our network, but I don't believe it disappears when you switch.

I think that's clearly related to demand on the network and higher contention for bandwidth will cause some services to suffer. We're doing our best to control latency and also give back more bandwidth where we can (through shaping Uncapped accounts).

Also, how do you explain the rest of the trace route being so poor on the AH side?

Then why don't you just admit that you do not have enough capacity in the South to cover the evenings demand, and stop trying to tweak your over complicated management software.

You can't please everyone and at this rate you will end up with both capped and uncapped users having a bad experience, rather than pleasing both, which extra capacity would achieve.

I am not sure how much things are improving because of your tuning vs the extra capacity freed up by people leaving or switching to alternative ISP's after 6PM like I do.

The feedback I have been given is that we have sufficient capacity, or we believe we do, for the moment. However, we are always watching closely to see if there is an opportunity to upgrade our capacity, considering usage, financial impact, etc. I don't believe we are quite there, but I don't have as much data as the network team - so I have to put my faith in them. Either way, the only work that can be done now is to focus on the wins we can make with the resources we have.

My word, this is a joke. The same things happening every year now. Sommer twice a year as well. Clients telling AH that they do not have enough capacity, AH replying that they do. Only to end up with a capacity upgrade. LOL this is so old already..

And I clearly recall AH saying that they have learnt a great deal the last time this happened and that they will do everything they can to not let it happen again. Well, guess what?

I'll definitely be p'd off if that were the case. I've definitely asked the question and have been told that we're not our of capacity and that we believe that if we can bring demand under control then our network can deliver a good experience. If I hear IPC upgrades being discussed at any level, I'll definitely let everyone know when I know.

I get that, but I get duplicate errors when i switch to them. Same errors on Netflix, streaming, packet loss etc. Yet I have smooth sailing on WA.

Go figure. I'm stumped

Thanks

It would make sense, they are on the same backbone. They manage their own traffic but that only goes so far when demand is high on the overall network :(

It won't matter if you reboot the router becuase the change of account will reset your connection usually. But the main thing is to test several times and see if there is a pattern across both accounts. Granted that it may look a little more pronounced on our account, but if there is inconsistent latency on your other account, it may not be the root cause.

You don't have to reboot the router at all.

Every time you disconnect and reconnect the port basically resets.

So to make the test fair, just slap in your WA details, connect, do the tests and the put in the AH details and do the same.

@Afriman, if you have multiple sites connected to teh same account, will the username.afrihost.co.za have the last login ip? and is there a way i can have it updated only from one of the sites?
