Hi - latency is up and down. Tested tonight at 409ms but yesterday it was 26ms. So, I don't think that is the issue - the issue is the download speed. I'm not at home during the day - so not sure what it's like then. I have run tests @ 16:30, 19:30, 20:00 and it's consistently slow - ranging between 1.22mbps and 2.76mbps

Are you seeing this latency on a speedtest? Might be caused by exchange issues... :( Please ping bras.afrihost.com for me?

Is Youtube the only service you're having trouble with at the moment? How is regular browsing and P2P?

Twitch, YT and Supersport are slow. If you've been following things here in the evenings you'd know that this has been an ongoing problem not just for me but many.

This morning @ 06:00 the line is flying! 3.6mbps download and pinging at 24ms (both on the speedtest and pinging bras.afrihost.com). I'll test again tonight.

Hi. Struggeling to download a backup file from my SVN repository. When I start the download my connection speed dies.

I am on a capped unshaped account, so it should not be shaping.

I am not even going to try to do a speedtest, but my 4th hop shows a 2720 ms ping time...

Tracing route to ***
over a maximum of 30 hops:

Ping bras.afrihost.com

If you see high latency to the BRAS, it is one of two things. Either exchange congestion or line saturation.

Ping bras.afrihost.com

If you see high latency to the BRAS, it is one of two things. Either exchange congestion or line saturation.

Pinging bras.afrihost.com [155.239.255.250] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 155.239.255.250: bytes=32 time=2127ms TTL=63
Reply from 155.239.255.250: bytes=32 time=2256ms TTL=63
Reply from 155.239.255.250: bytes=32 time=2287ms TTL=63
Reply from 155.239.255.250: bytes=32 time=1654ms TTL=63

Ping statistics for 155.239.255.250:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 1654ms, Maximum = 2287ms, Average = 2081ms

So it looks like line saturation, but I am only getting 9 400 B/s on an FTP download on a 2MB line, and that is the only thing I am doing. If I am saturating the line, should the speed then not be a little bit higher?

Or else congestion! It's 3 AM in the morning! I mean really? WTF?

Bras latency means something is seriously wrong there. Between your router and the exchange backhaul...

It's looking a bit better now, but still some latency. 12:30 pm on Sunday 7 May:

Pinging bras.afrihost.com [155.239.255.250] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 155.239.255.250: bytes=32 time=912ms TTL=63
Reply from 155.239.255.250: bytes=32 time=245ms TTL=63
Reply from 155.239.255.250: bytes=32 time=2552ms TTL=63
Reply from 155.239.255.250: bytes=32 time=200ms TTL=63

Ping statistics for 155.239.255.250:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 200ms, Maximum = 2552ms, Average = 977ms

Created ticket for it [OIW-868-45130]. I would appreciate it if one of the AfriPeeps from the Forum would take a look at it as well and let me know what is going on.

Thanks

That latency is terrible but at 2am, I experience latency between 100ms to 200ms to the exchange. Very weird.

This is my latency now:

Code:
PING bras.afrihost.com (155.239.255.250): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 155.239.255.250: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=14.7 ms
64 bytes from 155.239.255.250: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=15.1 ms
64 bytes from 155.239.255.250: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=14.8 ms
64 bytes from 155.239.255.250: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=14.8 ms
64 bytes from 155.239.255.250: icmp_seq=4 ttl=64 time=14.3 ms

--- bras.afrihost.com ping statistics ---
5 packets transmitted, 5 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 14.3/14.7/15.1 ms

99% of the time that is exchange congestion. Try a trace so we can see path?

Here it is. It looks a bit funny, because from hop 8 onwards the latency disappears, but that is the way it has been going all day, speed up and down all the time.

The latency starts on hop 3.

That's not normal, have you done a line reset through client zone?

It's funny, I was gonna post tonight for support, in general with regards to the bad throughput Ive been getting (especially 6-10) and the extra special game latencies...

But after reading a few pages of peoples problems and no solutions my new question is: Which ISP can I move to for gaming, nntp & streaming? Thanks...

Telkom has a special on 4Mbps & 10Mbps uncapped. Check that out?

Starting to look elseware and there will be a alternative to ADSL in my area within 2 - 3 months. It will be more expensive than Afrihost capped plus my ADSL line, but it seams between Afrihost and Telkom they can't get my line to perform as it used to. I get the idea that Telkom isn't bothered much by copper line maintenance these days, they do whatever's necessary just to get it on again, but there's no effort to try sort out small niggles.
