That's not normal, have you done a line reset through client zone?

Yeah, it was better from 4 pm till about 5 mins ago. Now back to 2000ms+ ping times.

ETA: Think I just found the problem. (Figured out what I did 5 mins ago.) A bitcoin client I was playing around with is trying to sync its block chain. It was eating up all the bandwidth. :whistling: If I switch it on, latency goes through the roof, if I switch it off, latency goes away.

Hi. Struggeling to download a backup file from my SVN repository. When I start the download my connection speed dies.

I am on a capped unshaped account, so it should not be shaping.

I am not even going to try to do a speedtest, but my 4th hop shows a 2720 ms ping time...

Tracing route to ***
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 10.0.0.2
2 * * * Request timed out.
3 * 3110 ms * jhb-up3.ip.adsl.co.za [169.1.5.29]
4 2216 ms * 2618 ms jhb-in2.ip.adsl.co.za [169.1.5.30]
5 1984 ms 1310 ms 1215 ms jhb-net1.ip.adsl.co.za [169.1.5.52]
6 1419 ms 1369 ms 1478 ms 169-1-5-74.ip.afrihost.co.za [169.1.5.74]
7 1936 ms 2058 ms 2139 ms 41.169.57.216
...

Uh... Wow... Something is definitely not running well there. :(

Were you able to ping bras.afrihost.com?

Here it is. It looks a bit funny, because from hop 8 onwards the latency disappears, but that is the way it has been going all day, speed up and down all the time.

The latency starts on hop 3.

:(

That's definitely an issue with the DSL line or on the Exchange itself. How are things looking today?

Starting to look elseware and there will be a alternative to ADSL in my area within 2 - 3 months. It will be more expensive than Afrihost capped plus my ADSL line, but it seams between Afrihost and Telkom they can't get my line to perform as it used to. I get the idea that Telkom isn't bothered much by copper line maintenance these days, they do whatever's necessary just to get it on again, but there's no effort to try sort out small niggles.

:(

Have we logged a fault with Telkom for your DSL Line? If there is an issue on the line itself, Telkom definitely should sort it out.

Ooooooooooo. Yes... That would explain the latency. :)

The latency should be pretty stable at this point. Which games are you seeing the latency in?

I have a capped account with afrihost I usually buy the R7 - 1GB on for emergencies/gaming. I want to let a friend of mine use the account to test with as he has been having problems with Telkom.

My question - is he able to use it? He has tried but it just doesn't work and the account is not in use with anyone else. Is it only tied with my phone number or something? Account is definitely working as I am able to use it (And no, I was not using it while he tried)

Is it the 1-GB Free Capped DSL account? Or is it a PrePaid DSL account? The 1-GB Free Capped accounts are linked to specific DSL lines.

Hi Guys

Just a general update on the state of the network :)

Around last week we saw a really huge spike in demand. We’ve generally had IPC capacity to spare, but this seemed to be consistent step up in demand, and not one we anticipated.

When we see persistent increases like this, we have to first ensure that a) Nothing is broken on the network or with our upstream partners; and b) that we’re correctly identifying all protocols and that we’re shaping efficiently (on products eligible to be shaped) to operate on maximum efficiency.

Once we were satisfied that this was not the case, we made the decision to order more IPC capacity (in all regions) to ensure that we address demand.

I just want to be clear that this is a demand issue which spiked last week. With day to day issues reported, it’s important to remember that we should never assume that the network is congested. Our NOC team and support team have to investigate to determine if this is an individual issue or limited to a small group, or a region-wide or network-wide issue. Thereafter, if it’s broader than an individual or small group of clients, we proceed as I mentioned earlier.

I’d like to thank everyone who has submitted tests and stats - these were very helpful along with our monitoring and user tests we conduct to improve the network.

We expect the additional capacity to go live within the next few days, and we’ll be monitoring closely to ensure we see the improvement and performance that we expect.

Your feedback will also help us a great deal, so we’d all like to thank you in advance :)

BS... AH have had capacity issues since January and you know it.

Now that things are getting worse and more people are complaining and leaving all of a sudden you've seen a massive spike in demand.

The fact that you had to reiterate twice that this only started last week says it all.
