Afrihost Capped DSL Feedback

what are you using to measure the results you posted?

You are based in CT. I will run a trace route form my side in PTA and post the results for you to compare.

I am on Telkom ISP and an ADSL 2 line.

Looking forward to what you find and good luck when you get to the point where you have to start trying to deal with MC to sort out the problem.

Now that's the tricky bit... I'll need to send you one of our test accounts. It runs on the SAIX network, and that should help us figure out if it's the CDN or peering.

Would you mind trying it out when the streaming performance starts dipping?

Fantastic. I can do that.

MTR on my linux box. Connected via Ethernet, running VDSL 20mbps. Line with AH.

And here are the results for dstvnow and Supersport.

Notice something about them? They all run over the exact same routings and the problem one experiences when everyone is streaming services especially live sport are all one and the same.

Hi!

It can take the ClientZnne a few hours to update once the line sync has changed.

If you DM me your DSL line number I'll make sure that your DSL line is on 20Mbps. :)

Shaping maybe classifying the traffic incorrectly? I am on Capped Shaped Accounts.

:(

I don't think it's shaping, if it was, you would be seeing Youtube and the other streaming services also affected.

The routing looks very similar on both traceroutes.

What sort of account do you have with IS?

I reach the showmax servers in 8 hops from PTA East 28 ms. Not sure why it would take that much more hops on IS from DBN?

It depends a lot on where and which networks the ISP peers with. To add extra confusion, depending on how the network devices are configured they may not even appear on the traceroute. :)

Yes I am quite aware that some service providers block SNMP traffic and thus you do not "see" them when using network diagnostics tools. What I am commenting on is the rather strange inexplicable routes that some traffic will take. I would have thought by now that streaming services would be setup to default to the most direct lowest latency route available and not wander around the country unless a fault condition exists.

So today, although the network does seem slower than normal, from PTA at least the traffic is taking a pretty direct route to NapAfrica for showmax. MC traffic is doing its usual trombone song and dance between JHB and CT.

I raised this issue quite a few months back, was told that the devs were being informed. My 20Mb/s line also only shows at a max of 10Mb/s on the client zone.

This is an API issue between our App and Openserve that doesn't display VDSL profiles. Are you seeing 20Mbps speeds?
