Afrihost Capped DSL Feedback

We have always been clear and open around our infrastructure and upgrades thereof. So much so that we even opened our network for beta testing during the Afrigreen phase. :)

LOL - you call that being transparent? I call that getting your users to do your testing for you because you can't adequately simulate the load...

Amazing how everything is "complex", "very advanced" and involves a process of "optimization" and "troubleshooting"... Yet, you identify a IPC issue "at the end of last week" (which is bull), and 2 days later, magical "upgrades" has been ordered. Where's the process of optimization now? Oh wait, you do optimization when you COMMISSION, not when you're already out of capacity. Where's the troubleshooting now? Oh wait, someone decided to actually LOOK at the trends on a cacti graph?

Let me spell this out for you AfriHost... You're not g*d, and you're not the only ones running "complex" networks :crylaugh: PS: Your BGP is a mess, and you should really learn to summarize your networks, it IS best practices, after all (that's now IF best practices applies to AfriHost).

Capacity planing, as you rightfully said before, is a never ending process. In terms of your capacity planing, you SHOULD HAVE ordered capacity MONTHS ago already. It's really as simple as that. I do not for ONE SECOND believe that a "sudden" spike in usage, magically now means you identified a capacity issue. A spike, is just that - a spike - it returns back to normal. Let's also not forget, this is now the THIRD TIME, that your so called "capacity planing" was a miserable failure, and your end users had to pay the price.

What you have here, is an EVER INCREASING demand (especially in the South, where the problems first started last year already), and AfriHost sitting on their asses and doing nothing about it. Now that the ***** hits the fan, NOW SUDDENLY there is a IPC shortage, and NOW SUDDENLY, there is a shaping / profiling error?

Why was the problem with the shaping not seen LAST YEAR already? I'll tell you why... Because you REFUSE to listen to your customers. Because AfriHost is always right, screw everyone else. That's why.

I'm really sorry you feel that way, Tw171.:( I think Afriman explained quite well that we can't take general complaints as a reason and a basis to upgrade IPC capacity. Processes of troubleshooting have to be completed first and an optimization of current infrastructure before further steps can even be considered. It's not as black and white as it may seem. We have very advanced network management tools as well as partnerships and agreements with upstream providers, peering providers and CDNs to manage and offer the best possible experience for our DSL users.

As mentioned, IPC demand only became a real issue near the end of last week at which point an immediate decision was made to upgrade. :)

I did not discuss feelings. Nobody did. Stop apologizing for your perceived notion of our feelings.

Are you saying that congestion only now, within the last week, became an issue? Even though you guys have been playing for space on the network, applying shaping to all accounts, splintering your capped into shaping and non-shaping, which you might recall, we pointed out suggests to us that there is congestion concern on your network and despite the nice PR talk about empowering clients, was in actuality a necessity to try and ease congestion. You guys assured as then that wasn't the case. So we are left to believe that, either, you are lying to us all along, or are so incompetent that even your customers could call out a problem months ago that now snuck up on you within the last week.

We never believed that our network was congested. We saw demand spike last week to a point where we weren't happy with the performance of the network. This is why we made the decision to upgrade after which we immediately notified our users on the forums.

You were the only ones.

Just a pity that you guys have such a high tolerance for crappy performance, because if you even bothered to listen to your customers on these forums, you'd have known that the performance was quite terrible. Anyhow, I don’t see any refutation of what amounts to sheer incompetence when it comes to dealing with a problem that your customers saw coming way before you guys did. And seeing as you are going this route. Can your customers expect that future capacity problems will only be dealt with once the network grinds to a nightly crawl, like it did this time?

Hey Afrihost. Great to hear about the additional capacity. Do inform us when it goes live. Would love to run tests to check the performance. Hope FB video performance improves.

I think it's unfair to blame incompetence. As mentioned by Afriman, we have actively been reporting complaints and our network team are actively monitoring performance on the network - as well as managing the network accordingly.

There are processes and steps that have to be completed before a decision can be made to upgrade IPC. There are many dynamic factors that influence the performance of a network, and IPC capacity addresses a portion of that, but is in no means the ultimate solution to every problem. As we have made clear before, other steps have to be taken to manage the performance of a network, and we address each issue as it comes to light. Seeing a spike in demand last week resulted us in upgrading IPC. I like to think that we reacted quickly. :)

Will do, moedawood. :) Thanks for the support.

So you only miraculously noticed the spike on the network now...

Please give a reasonable explanation for this issue I reported to you on 15/01.

I don't believe any AH rep ever responded to the post.

Those links just load the first post on the respective threads. :(

Hmmm? Afrihost is and always has been fine for me. Perhaps you should switch to the unshapped capped accounts.

As AfriGuy announced last night, we are in the process of rolling out additional IPC capacity. :) We've seen a significant uptick in demand over the past few days.

Yes so you say.

Im asking for a logical explanation to those three posts which date back to January indicating capacity issues that you never responded to.

What's with the smiley faces?
