Afrihost Fibre Activation Time

Hey there

Two weeks ago my landlady messaged me to say that we now had fibre. Nice!

Only we didn't actually have fibre. I think the line was installed two weeks ago but as far as I can tell we are still connected to our old 4mbps internet. The afrihost clientzone site says of her account: "Processing Order".

I thought the hard part was installing the line and after that enabling the service was quite simple from their side. Should it really be taking this long or has my landlady missed a setup email or something? On their FAQ it says something like "after your line is installed it will take up to 5 days to be activated" (their site is down as I write this lol). So that doesn't really match up either.

Anyone been through this process have some advice?

Thanks
Doug

Not sure about Afrihost but with Cool Ideas it took about 5 minutes.

If you have the physical line into the premises and the ONT is connected and running, you should be able to connect to any affiliated fibre ISP within minutes (assuming you have a router that can connect via WAN).

Okay thanks guys. We're connected to our old internet via the fiber line as far as I can tell so I can't see any reason why we can't just swap out the details in the router. I just don't know what those details are. Do they normally email the username and password?

EDIT:

Turns out I should be able to access those details on their clientzone site. But that just says they are processing the account and doesn't provide the details. How on earth can it take this long after the line is installed for them to activate it?

Give them a call and find out. Probably human error.

If you're connected via telkom fibre, you should be able to use any DSL account.

Ok so I got this sorted yesterday. Kind of. I called in and was told about a B-number then the call cut out. The second time I called in I got someone else and they just said they could send the username and password for the account. Finally. So I logged in with those details and Afrihost sent a confirmation SMS that we are up and running. Great! Well not quite.

I've yet to see the speed go over 4mbps down and 2mbps up on any speed test I've done. It should be 10 down and 5 up. I found out about openserve's guest account and did a speed test and the problem seems to be on their side. This makes sense to me as it feels like we are being limited by the original Telkom line speed of 4mbps. There's also a small chance this is linked to network problems they are having but the fact that it never goes over 4mbps has me suspicious. Where do you get the openserve login details to log into their site? Or should I raise this issue via Afrihost? WHY U NO WORK PROPERLY INTERWEB
