afrihost help

Anyhow, no idea, i assume it will work similar to overseas where your passport is used as a form of RICA-proof . When i bought an Orange prepaid sim in Holland, i had to phone some "Activation Helpdesk" [on the prepaid sim] first , they basically would ask questions about where i am from , how long i'm staying etc etc and then activate the sim.

Only trouble is, not sure our helpdesks are as efficient as Orange's were [no waiting time, friendly and clearly understandable person on the other end and even giving you some extra touristy information at the same time ].

Thanks. I did a quick google and it would seem that they didn't actually consider this when RICA was introduced.

Zolisa Masiza, MTN`s group executive for regulatory issues, says tourists can use their home SIM cards on a roaming basis. However, those purchasing new cards while in SA for the games “will be required to provide their full names, surname, original passport document and residential address in their home country to a RICA officer or agent”.

Masiza points out that – after the games when the tourists leave – the SIM cards they have purchased will have to be discarded responsibly. “The obligation is on the foreign visitor to destroy their SIM card once they have left the country,” he says.

Same, but some companies can take DAYS to actually verify/read their email and activate the account. So when you know they require these documentation you generally also know it will never be "instant" activation. Now Afrihost seems to be pretty fast, but i know of other ISPs who can take 2-5 days with this process.

Yea, that's pretty much what they do in europe too, asking for the same information. However it's not applied consistently, if you buy the Sim from some remote little town in the middle of alps they don't seem to care. If you buy it on the airport, they ask for your passport usually.

So if you can skip it all, why wouldn't you? It's always a schlep doing these things if you don't have the facilities at your work. Of course if you're a business user, you will have these things all sorted, but as a end-user who might be something ranging from a student to your grandmother..........
