Afrihost Internet experiencing DNS problems

I got a message from AfriHost apologising for the downtime.

Yesterday's outage was confirmed to be a result of a Denial of Service attack on MTN's DNS cluster. The servers basically couldn't cope with the load, and it was difficult for us to bring them up again while the attack was still in progress. We diverted our DNS to Google's Public DNS temporarily while we dealt with the DOS problem. Our DNS is back up and running as of around 18:00 yesterday.

Some clients still seem to be using Google DNS, which will probably result in slower access than usual, and may upset some other features that are DNS reliant (i.e. certain ClientZone functions). A quick router reboot should do the trick, but check your DNS reverts back to our dynamic settings on 196.7.7.7. and 196.7.8.9

Sorry again to everyone who had no or slow connectivity yesterday. We really did our absolute best to get this sorted and our team were up till all hours monitoring the network to make sure we didn't go down again.

Yeah... um... Afrihost owns Axxess....

I dont trust SA DNS providers. Telkoms always go down. So Ive used Google DNS for years now. Not a days problem :)

Yip, haven't used SA DNS in years, don't understand why you would want to.

Hey AfriMan

Is there still a problem with the SMTP Servers?

Been checking your network stats and it says everything is fine.... http://www.afrihost.com/site/network_status

SMTP was looking happy last time I checked. However our spam cluster was taking a hammering, might be due to undelivered mails from yesterday, or people running billing invoices at month end - or both. We manaed to get things back on track around midday :(

From what I could see, using Public DNS does give me a slightly less than awesome performance. Also messed up some of my web based services for Afrihost. We definitely recommend using Dynamic DNS for best performance on our network.
