Afrihost issues that needs to be sorted out...

Edit:
My account is still locked though even after a router restart, think ill just move over to my webafrica account and forget about it, to frustrating to get this working.

This seems to need some attention, twice I've been capped, topped up but only been able to get it working after restarting the router. A problem when other PCs on the network are busy (using other accounts).

I got the same feedback from them and that it wasn't feasible for them to change their accounting/billing system (for the R29/GB offering) to accommodate such a offering, due to the way the "special" business model had been constructed.

Grid host uses a system similar in all intents to paypal but works on a local model, whereby you can deposit money, if and when needed into your account. This is then linked as a payment option on Grid host site as a other form of transfer.

Now if this can even be used for their current cheapest hosting model of R8.95, surely the costs can't be that bad to justify it for Afrihosts offering? Or is it just not worth the effort?

Another payment option at least!
They market the pre-paid at R39, which is higher than the normal account offering.
Apparently places like WebAfrica charge more because they allow EFT payments. This is how Afrihost saves money. (Also by employing cheaper/dumber staff it seems)

I must say I cant fault afrihost at this stage the other my adsl went down phoned them and in 10 mins I was up again

Eishhh !!!!

I certainly hope he isn't, but not sure as there is no :D / :)

B

you can't be serious?

Of course I am serious.

If they continue with their current methodology, I will be forced to cancel my existing contract with them and take out a much smaller one so that I can take advantage of the top-up prices. If everyone does this, then Afrihost will lose their core customers, ending up with only top-up customers.

Fair point, but that would still not augment the fact that service providers such as Grid host can "effectively" implement a user friendly option for those who do not wish to or can't pay by debit order or credit card.

It's the excuse that got to me, I didn't bother me to press the point as it never gets you any where and as you said their staff aren't the brightest or at least how they are taught/instructed to interact with the general public.

If they are following this thread, they can only pick up from the constructive remarks and take it as feedback. I am in no way wanting to bash their offering as such, only would like to help in contributing in a improvement on a service that will eventually be usurped by some other offering. At least they would have progressed in a service element/s that will still benefit their over all business model in the long run. Indeed all ISP's could learn from what is generated in this thread and self evaluate themselves :)

Speaking of support. Afrihost are clearly not trying to impress. I spoke to a guy who gave me the completely wrong information in the boldest, most confident speech (!). I then called again and spoke to another guy who offered to correct it in an e-mail.
Nearly 4 hours later he hasn't bothered making contact and doesn't really recall speaking to me. He kept me on hold (expensive call) without offering to return the call, so I hung up.

I tried the online help system (support.afrihost.com/) but it doesn't work on local.

Which dilbert made the decision to put a dedicated support site on International bandwidth??

i really don't think many people will do what you are saying you will have to do. My guess rather is that people will make a judgement call at the time the offer is on about how much their usage could be. that is certainly what I do. and if nearer the month it seems i may have bought more than i need, i will make some effort to use up the balance.

list updated. top from the first of the month is not really an operational issue, however running it closer to the 25th till the next month's 10/15th day will have those who have been loyally topping up also the chance to cheaply topup.

In the client zone there is a option for changing your package. You can make it smaller or bigger. if you go bigger, its immediate and if you go smaller it will be from the next month. I did it a few time already :)
Afrihost isn't that bad and for the price they are offering I'm willing to be patient.

SO should you :)

i also used that option without fail and it worked like a charm.

Regarding my account being blocked it worked the next day, so maybe sometimes you need to give it 24hours to reflect, the router restart was not enough.

I use 10GB a month. It actually sits at around 8.5GB -> 9.7GB a month.
This costs me about R300 from Afrihost.
The bandwidth is used for fairly predictable internet use.

So, you're saying that I must:
- Change the size of the package to 1GB at the end of the month.
- Change the size of the package as the month progresses, which will give me top-up discount happiness.
- At the end of the month, change it back down again, and run the risk of being unable to change it down.

That's just silly, and does not encourage me to remain a loyal customer.

I am going to switch to www.myisp.co.za where I can get my 10GB for almost R100 cheaper and not have to deal with the extra admin.

I agree with speed issues. It seems to have degenerated since the begining of the year. This is my speedtest on a 384 line. Not great.

from previous weekend. this one, i've been getting full speeds on IS without any issues.

hmmm. i suppose we are not going to get feed back then. :(

My speedtest with afrihost 4mb line:

Torrents run at full speed if seeded well, streaming is fine, no lag whatsoever. I haven't had much experience with the other problems, and I cant think of any problems about paying with a credit card (unless you don't have one), it's free as opposed to direct debits and eft's, and generally you earn miles/points on your credit card.

The hard or immediate capping is something Afrihost could definitely work on to save everybody headaches, but then we would all rape our line at the end of month to make sure its depleted before the new month. Which would firstly make it less profitable for Afrihost, and secondly (i'm not sure about their contention ratios) reduce the speeds we all experience at the end of the month.
