So, I created an account with them, purchased 5GB prepaid data, got confirmation .... and then a sms telling me to email a copy of my ID to them. WTF?????

I phoned them and said "I will not give you my ID, cos tomorrow an illegal immigrant might be using my details to apply for work".

Lets see if I get my money back.

Oh, and screw Afrihost.

6,379 posts and you have not seen any of the numerous threads before mentioning that Afrihost require a copy of your ID? It is a RICA requirement!

take a pic with your phone, upload it to computer and send it via email. easy peasy

[edit] what lancelotsa said but without being sarcastic and down right mean about it

I have NEVER given Axxess a copy of my ID document - not when i signed up or after that. Just seems strange that if it is a RICA requirement why aren't all ISPs asking for a copy of your ID :confused:

Dont worry - they will be.

I sent them a copy of my ID in PDF with the word COPY written over it in RED a couple of times. Safe enough.

They are trying to protect themselves from fraud. They would not be able to offer the prices they do if they were taken by fraudsters with fake credit cards and bogus EFTs.

I just DONT want to give anyone a copy of my ID book.

They want to protect themselves against fraud, but what if they are the fraudsters?

I am pretty sure AfriHost is not out to defraud people - look how many have signed up... and nary a complaint about funny stuff regarding ID's...

Don't be lazy. This is a small amount of work for you to do to enjoy some good service. Afrihost is not exactly a one hit wonder.

Stop complaining.

+1000
I had the similar frustration but I succumbed and gave them my ID.
R29 as opposed to R70 was reason enough to swallow my pride.

I doubt they will use your ID seen they have sooo many already.

I can vouch for fraud being very high on the internet and don't blame them for requiring a copy of the ID.

Besides - Real criminals will get a real ID book from their buddy at home affairs - they won't use a copy of yours..

Another ID10T who does not read the entire page and them blames someone else for his mistake: :p

"*INSTANT ACTIVATION: Existing Afrihost clients will be instantly activated. New clients will need to take one extra step to verify their details by faxing or emailing through a photo or copy of either their ID or driver's licence after which their account will be activated."

Don't you think that would've come out the wash by now?

Sadly I just wasted 5 minutes of my precious time here ... tally ho!
