Afrihost L2TP config for fixed IP on D-Link DIR-655 router

Have not been able to get this to work on the D-Link DIR-655 which is a good router which is still quite popular (getting a bit long in the tooth). I really don't want to get a Billion Router just to get fixed IP to work.

The DIR-655 does support L2TP connections, but its parameter list includes fields which Afrihost doesn't supply. This includes a "L2TP Gateway IP Address" field, whose value cannot be null or 0.0.0.0.

Also, the DIR-655 does not provide a field for the "Secret" code.

Has anyone been able to determine whether the DIR-655 router is supported?

I have requested assistance from Afrihost, but none has been forthcoming.

If the router does not have the ability to add a secret you will most likely not be able to connect it at all even if you get the rest sorted. Without entering the secret is like trying to connect to a wfi network without being able to enter the password. Maybe try DLINK for support on this..

Since it is a single IP service the netmask is probably 255.255.255.255 and the gateway is the same as the fixed WAN IP.

But the fact that there is no secret is agreeably a show-stopper for this router. Not sure why the secret is used? What value is added?

Yes you are correct with regards to the IP and subnet ,but without being able to add a secret you will not be able to connect if its required.
The reason it is used is for security purposes. Contact D-LINK and find out if there is not maybe firmware that adds the secret feature or maybe CLI commands that you can use for adding a secret.
