Yes, I got opted out messages for both *130*601# and *130*603# I have no loyalty program attached to my number as it was ported from Cell C to MTN just last week.

Once those opt-outs go through you should no longer receive the marketing messages.

Dear Afrihost,

As my service provider I must draw your attention to the following:

At or around 6am each morning I receive unsolicited promotional SMS from MTNReward.

As the above is an approach for the purpose of direct marketing which relies upon personal information which I did not provide to you, your message constitutes an unsolicited communication in terms of section 45 of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act (Act 25 of 2002)(ECTA), as read with section 11 of the Consumer Protection Act (Act 68 of 2008)(CPA) or alternatively, as the case may be, Section 69 of the Protection of Personal Information Act (Act 4 of 2013)(POPIA)

In terms of the acts listed above, this message serves as a notification that I do not wish to receive any further communications from you or your agents. Kindly confirm that you will discontinue all future communication in this regard.

Please note that a failure to comply with this request constitutes a criminal offence in terms of section 45 of the ECTA and that the continued receipt of unsolicited communications may lead to prosecution. Additionally, I hereby request that you immediately disclose where you obtained my contact details, as per section 45(1) of the ECTA and/or section 22(1) of the POPIA. Failure to respond to this request may also constitute a criminal offence.

I note that your original message did not provide me with an option to cancel my subscription to your mailing list, as required by section 45(1) of the ECTA and/or section 69(4) of the POPIA. This means that you may already have committed an offense in terms of the respective Acts and may be subject to prosecution.

Should you wish to familiarise yourself with the relevant legislation, or check my facts, a copy of the ECTA, CPA and POPIA are available on-line via the Government's web site and can be found here:

Done a week ago... ICASA next step!

Sorry to hear you want to go that route, you're more than welcome to, but I'm happy to help.
Please try running the USSD again, pasting the result of the response.

If I run the commands again it will turn the stuff on again and the wheels on the bus go round and round! Sing along now!

You can always run it again if you're prompted with that.
Failing that, I can only recommend getting in touch with MTN directly.

I have spoken to MTN and they have escalated the issue to their marketing people.

So, tomorrow morning will be the test. If this works, then Afrihost will need to find out how MTN do it or fall on the wrong side of the law, keeping in mind that you are a MVNO and this makes you responsible for the network even though it's being provided by a third party.

Having spoken to two other MTN pre-paid users, it would appear that recharging shuts up the MTNReward SMS's. However, as my calling and data is provided by Afrihost, you need to find out why this is occurring...

Keep me posted on how things go.

Dear Diary, today is Thursday and all is well, well it is according to SABC news! Plus no more early morning MTNReward messages from MTN!

MTN know how to stop these incessant messages once you've got through the hoops of USSD codes that don't work!

This does however prove that MTN are operating in breach of the law on unsolicited junk SMS. This needs to be resolved as I couldn't recommend using Afrihost/MTN services for this reason!

Great to hear things are fixed up.

@AfriGuy, any idea why my Afrihost Huawei E5577 mobile device will not resolve www.raspberrypi.org? I keep on getting a "server DNS address could not be found. DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN" error.

Sounds like an odd one, is that the only site that isn't responding?
Are you able to ping the site?

Seems to be the only one. was playing around last night on the raspberry pi and was unable to use apt-get update, unable to resolve. Was also unable to browse to the site or to ping it.

That's very odd. What DNS servers are being used?
Odd that you aren't able to ping it at all though.
