Nope not forcing it onto anything.

Wasn't around home when I tested it. Was in 3 different areas and same thing.

Tonight at home my phone was on 3g but my Afrihost couldn't connect higher than 2g. Weird this only started yesterday.

Will test again today at work

The part about contract and month-to-month is a huge factor though. We don't lock you into a contract and most people find their Mobile needs changing over time. You get DSL at home, or VDSL, or you need to upgrade use more data in one month and then go back to a lower contract. Not really possible without penalties or other charges. With us it will be different, and we believe that many will pay a little more for the convenience and freedom to do what they like when they like. Also, top up on standard rates vs out-of-bundle rates will end up being a huge saving for many people opting for that (or any other) Mobile Data product.

I understand that, and that wasn't my point.

I'm not going to go with a 12 or 24 month contract. I'm going to go with Afrihost Mobile Two.

My point was that if you had a better priced Mobile One, you would make more money off me, and others. At the current pricing going with Two is a no brainer.

Especially those of us with several people in our household, I would sign up the whole household for Mobile One, but now I'd rather have two Mobile Two packages shared.

Hey Afriman - will we be able to upgrade our Mobile Two to a Mobile Three including the extra 7GBs?

0.31 Mb/s download speedtest to MTN Business server in Joburg while in 3G mode on Afrihost. Put my Cell C SIM in and I'm getting 9.06 Mb/s.

MTN is something of a disappointment, I hope they improve their network to the point where they're at least somewhere in the same ballpark.

And please reenable the ability to force 3G or 2G mode from the web interface.

Fantastic was using this with streaming Simfy and Skype calls. No issues today brilliant

Brilliant news! I heard back in the days that MTN would charge valued service for such services like Skype etc, anything VOIP related but never followed the story up.

MTN had this in their old T&C's - it allowed them to charge R25/MB for data usage relating to voip usage. To date I have not heard of anyone being charged said rate. From what I'm aware this provision has since been removed from their terms in any case. Although nothing is stopping any ISP to start charging a premium for VOIP traffic in the form of a prioritizing service for VOIP data. You already see something similar on ADSL where you have premium 'gaming' accounts providing lower pings to specific protocols. But I do not expect to see mobile services like this popping up too soon - maybe somewhere down the line.

Indeed it is excellent, waiting for my wife's device to arrive. It will save a fortune on call charges. My cellphone bill is usually through the roof. I have now got an unlimited Skype to Landline call service and so far it is working quite well.

@Lino I always shop around before initiating that phone call. (prepaid all the way) my fingers also have been burnt several of times with contract due to open line, come month-end bill shocker.

You'll now be saving an extra R100 - R200 per month on your phone bill to subsidize your MiFi bundle :)

You can force 3G:
Where you see that?

Ok found it and just changed mine. Under setting mobile connection first change to manual then under network settings change preferred mode to 3G only
