Afrihost Mobile Feedback Thread

There's no referrals for mobile data, only adsl. That correct?

I have now made it a point NOT to refer mobile data users to Afrihost...

Being in the Cellular trade, it takes a lot of time to explain to Joe Public how to set up Afrihost Mobile on their MTN account. As this time and effort is not rewarded with even so much as a thank you... Referrals from me have ceased!

I'm sorry you feel this way, I can promise that we'd do referrals if we could. The reality is that sell Mobile Data so far below cost, that any revenue we could put towards referral discounts is already subsidising the prices that every client receives.

Obviously it's up to you whether you are doing it for the simple reason of turning others onto a good deal. But the more people who are referred, the longer we can continue to maintain these low prices and maybe even drop them in the future.

Cool story.

Thing is Telkom Mobile just dropped their prices yesterday. I'm currently on 10GB for R497 + 10GB for R99 (double your data) = R596. They have 20GB for R399.

If you guys are far below cost, then they must be far far below cost as it is almost R200 cheaper... :p

I'm also considering switching but it's a 24 month contract with Telkom.

Wow thats really not a bad Idea

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to stay with Afrihost if they can compete. TM is a 24 month contract, so I don't expect the same R399, but at least something close to it (incl double your data).

Rep says they try to provide more value, but I'm not seeing R200 worth of value. I don't care about Simfy and all that other stuff, I just want bare bones data.

But if things don't change soon, then I may as well sign up for a 24 month contract with TM, because at the current pricing it means that I can get 3 months on TM for the same price as 2 months on AM...

Can't comment on how they structure their pricing. It depends on what their upstream costs are and whether that is a permanent price or a time conditional offer (as many mobile offerings are). We also use a similar base rate on our topup and out of bundle prices where other providers prices increase exponential when you go out of bundle. So it's up to the individual but I believe our prices are great in general.

We don't do 24 months because we always want our clients to know that they're with us because they have the best value and experience, not becuase we locked them into a deal. A year from now, the mobile landscape could look completely different, and we may offer something that blows this out of the water.

Personally, very wary of anything that requires a long term commitment that would preclude me from getting a better deal when I want it.

That TM pricing is good - but I don't want to be locked into a 24 month contract with them.

Exactly why I'd rather stay with you guys wherever possible :) But if it turns into a general trend and you're not adapting then I may be forced to consider other options :(

It's definitely not about not adapting. I can promise you that our base price for Mobile is well below our upstream cost. If we adapt any further, we'll go broke ;)

Lies, damned lies, and South African data prices!

It's the absolute truth. We subsidise our mobile data prices to bring them as low as possible, one of the reasons we couldn't sustain double data on mobile. I can't reveal the actual figures, but they definitely are higher than you probably think.

I have no doubt that your wholesale buy price is high as all South African networks keep their data artificially high.

A classic comparison is say, GiffGaff UK with 2000 Anytime minutes, unlimited SMS and UNLIMITED data! Just £20 per month!
