Afrihost Mobile Feedback Thread

I reacted to the September e mail from Afrihost and signed up for the "data for all" package. I received my sim which was mysteriously cancelled by MTN on Sunday. I was informed that it was cancelled as it had remained dormant for 90 days despite me having used the 250MB data from Afrihost.
Afrihost then offered courier me a new one FOC. I received the sim yesterday and it wasn't foc as the R150 appeared on my bank statement.
After many back and forth e mails, I suddenly get told that I erroneously signed up for a "voice" package.
How a voice package can have a name "data for all" is actually quite beyond me.
Needles to say I am utterly disgusted with Afrihost mobile and have decided to revert back to my old tried and trusted Vodacom

Hi Oldman. Sorry about the delayed response regarding the matter. :( I'm sorry to hear about your poor experience. Unfortunately MTN SIM cards will expire after 90 days if they appear to be dormant on their network. Unfortunate;ly this does not include the Afrihost APN. The only way to keep your MTN SIM active would be to run an MTN service in the form of topping up, doing a balance check or making a call on the network. If this does not happen, MTN will re-assign the number.

Further, I'm sorry to hear about the misunderstanding regarding the Mobile Voice sign-up. We do offer the option to select a Voice Package or stand alone data package for #DatForAll, as some clients would prefer to sign up for this solution. Luckily it's easy for us to switch you between Data and Voice upon request.

It sounds like you have decided to move back to your previous provider and I'm truly sorry to see you go. :( We are, still, always happy to assist you with any issue or account query that you may have and please do not hesitate to send me a PM at any time if you need some help. :)

Thanks for confirming, thought it was just me. Out in Rondebosch too...
Still not working.
Eh.
Bought mtn data and switched over to the mymtn APN for the day.

Hello.

So I got an Afrihost/MTN sim for a Rand a while back, to try it out.

I've loaded some data since, via the Afrihost app, and am now trying to load the 2 Gigs for R99 from the Afrihost website, and I get: "There is an active product, using this number".

Help!

Sounds like you're trying to load a data bundle offering across packages.

Afrihost have two options:

1.) Voice & data sim you'd typically use in your phone.
2.) Data only sim you'd typically use in a router.

Those two packages have different topup options:
My Data only sim has afrihostplus enabled which gives me the 1+1gb for R99, but I don't have that available on my voice+data sim - there I only get the 1gb for R99.

Very happy with AfriHost except at home where the Vodacom signal is superior.

Remember that MTN have a coverage query process, where they will investigate areas where coverage needs to be improved. They are generally pretty pro-active, because improving signal for you will benefit other MTN users in the area :)

Sounds like you're not doing a topup, and are trying to buy another package. You can either use the data topup feature in the ClientZone or our App, or use the package change feature to upgrade your package.

Drop me a PM if you need help :)

If you are using mobile data, the rates are the same, except for topups and for prepaid mobile data.

morning all sorry if this is the wrong way of approaching the forum however for a non techy please bare with me. I have a question regarding the coverage of afrihost in the mossel bay area and specifically feedback from current users I am looking at the 10GB package per month and will connect approximately 6 devices to it. Can one use a different mobile modem to connect to afrihost such as older Vodafone or only the advertised ones on their site? Any feedback or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hey there, Eugene! :) Thanks for reaching out! This is the best place to get your questions answered.

With regards to coverage, we use MTN network infrastructure (ie MTN towers) on our Mobile network. This means that MTN coverage and Afrihost coverage is effectively the same. If you have a coverage issue in your area, it will have to be logged with MTN, but we can help expedite the query. :)

Secondly, our SIMs or APN is not locked to the devices that we sell. You are free to use any mobile router or device as long as you are able to create a new APN profile. :) I'd be happy to guide you through the setup as soon as you are ready.

Thank you Afriman, for all your help.

Onto the next problem:

I am primarily using this data to play an online game: http://pathofexile.com/ which has a London based server.

Currently, this is not working well at all - Pings are up into the 1000s where they should typically be ~200ms (Testing with a Vodacom account yielded perfect and consistent results in the same scenario).

I'm trying to run a speedtest, but it cannot even manage that.

Please help, thank you!

*edit*

General internet performance is abysmal right now.

Sorry to hear about your poor experience here. :( Have you noticed any degradation of your signal/coverage during this time? Vodacom naturally use different network infrastructure than MTN so it will be hard to compare. Please feel free to PM me your account details while you're experiencing problems with your connection and we'll do some realtime troubleshooting.

I just mention Vodacom to indicate the issue lies with the connectivity itself, rather than any of my equipment and/or game server issues. A good start is to eliminate variables, of course. If I PM you the cell number in question, will that be sufficient?

The connection seems to have ups and downs - Sometimes it's perfect, other times, a bit bananas. I'm sure we can resolve it!

Thanks!

That definitely makes a lot of sense. :) The cell number linked to your mobile account will be perfect.
