Driving in the dead centre of the 5g map and still 4g+

Do I need a special SIM that can do 5g or something? This one's fairly old but LTE works just fine

There is no special simcard needed and 5G is available for prepaid.

There must be a provisioning issue on the sim or the tower is not 5G enabled as the coverage map suggests.

5G is not enabled or blocked on the APN level.

Odd, since there's only 3 places in WC it seems, Blouberg, Kraaifontein (assume for Buhrein estate) - this is where I was, and Stellenbosch.

Maybe they jumped the gun on the coverage map and as you say it's not enabled as yet on the towers.

I did try both APNs but nothing. I may head through Blouberg some time and check there.

Might be worth a try to give MTN a ring but by default prepaid simcards are enabled for 5G.

I have personally tested a few and straight after RICA and inserting them into a Huawei P40 Lite 5G and within 5G coverage in Centurion it picked up 5G coverage.

I think doing a SIM swap myself would probably be less painful than speaking to someone at the MTN call centre

Seems it was an inaccurate map. Visited Blouberg and got some good 5G tests on MTN. Positioning makes a huge diff in speeds.

Uploads pretty low in comparison

@AfriNatic

Hi, any reports for issues in Parrow on MTN?

Thanks.

We seldom get reports from MTN regarding tower outages. They are likely already aware of an issue.

We add notices for major outages when it comes to mobile service as it's impossible to track area/tower outages accurately.

Ok thanks, also weird because something ****ey in rustenburg but no notices.

I'm considering an Afrihost Pure LTE connection as a backup for when the power is out, which unfortunately is happening a lot in PE thanks to the frequent failures with the Ditchling substation.

As far as I can tell, the ZTE MF286c sold by Afrihost is completely useless for this use case, as that specific version seems to have the battery removed (why?) and even the variant with the battery only lasts for up to 3 hours.

I see a reasonably priced ZTE MF927U router available that is a proper portable hotspot, with up to 6 hours of battery. But Afrihost goes on about only approved devices being usable with Pure LTE sim cards. Is this one supported @AfriNatic?

Hi,

Unfortunately it's not as it's a Mifi.

The Telkom LTE sim from us should work in it though.

I'd rather use the MTN network. It's really nonsensical how any fixed LTE SIM card cannot work in any LTE router. Thanks for confirming though.

The only other option to consider is to get a UPS for the FrogFoot ONT?

I use Openserve. A proper inverter setup is where I'd like things, as the network has a whole bunch of Ubiquiti stuff incl. multiple PoE access points. So an LTE backup covers home use but also if I'm with clients or travelling.

Okay makes sense. Unfortunately the MTN fixed LTE is also location locked and not just specific routers. As sonns as you move the sim to a new location MTN locks the simcard.

Wow, that is dumb. Never ordering one of those packages then. God forbid someone use a mobile connection when mobile.

Thanks for the info. Very glad to know that.

The MTN fixed LTE simcards from all ISPs including MTN direct has these restrictions unfortunately.

I have a new problem. This time with my regular Afrihost SIM card that runs in my cellphone. Why is the network blocking my data connection if it detects that I'm broadcasting a Wi-Fi hotspot with my phone?

If I toggle my sim slots or toggle mobile data whilst the hotspot is active, I get an exclamation mark and zero data throughput. This can also just happen after a period of time when using the hotspot. I have to ensure the hotspot is disabled when connecting to MTN and then enable a hotspot.
