Afrihost Mobile Feedback

Did Afrihost changed their approved LTE Router list for 4G Fixed LTE. Previously my Huawei B535 router was listed, but not any more?

Yep, here is the post from @AfriNatic about it.

++Notice++

Please note that our MTN Fixed LTE will be discontinued for new signups soon. Due to the nature of LTE and the finite resources available on this technology, we have outgrown what can be offered on LTE.

In the near future, Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE and 5G will be migrated to a new service called Afrihost Pure Wireless. We will only sell these packages with 5G router whether or not you have 5G or not and if you are not in 5G coverage, it will work on 4G/LTE.

This is to migrate most of our traffic onto the 5G network for better speeds, latency and reliability.

Once the change is completed, if a client signs up for a SIM-only package, it will only work on the 5G approved router list or a 4G router that has been used on the MTN network for fixed LTE before. If it's a new 4G router, it will no longer be supported.

Seems it's time to jump ship here.
Melon Mobile has VoLTE and VoWiFi.
Afrihost, nothing. It would seem Afrihost are not actively interested in getting this implemented....
Bump @Afrigirl

Any updates?

3G is being turned off in our town tower by tower.

So we struggle to make calls now.

Drops down to 'no service' when calling, or 1 bar signal and the calls breakup.

We can't carry on like this.

Mobile Data on 4G has full signal and works fine.

Afriteam, is it possible to use data roaming on your APN? I often do brief cross border travel and it's a pain changing APN's especially when I forget to change it back when in SA 😭

Hi.

International roaming is not enabled at this time.

Seems to happen in my area as well with cellc using mtn.

Volte is not yet enable for cellc so now when you make a call on cellc it wants to go from 4G to 3G signal. no 3G signal = no call.

I have now forced my cellc sim to 2G only and my afrihost one on 4G only for data...

Cell C does support VoLTE. Check with support or do a sim swop to a newer sim

contract or prepaid ? Reason asking the guy I talk to told me they are still working on prepaid

Hi.

I will check with the team.
Thanks.

MTN advised they are turning off 3G in rural areas first as part of their trials, this to re-farm spectrum to 4G and 5G.

Planned 3G shutdown nationwide scheduled for December 2026.

2G will remain for now, however is now heavily congested by devices dropping down to 2G that don't support 4G and 5G.

As well as devices dropping down from 4G to complete calls that don't support VoLTE and MVNO's that have not provisioned VoLTE. Hence the problems.

Going to put in cancellation for my 10 SIM's so long and port out end of Feb if AirMobile does not support VoLTE and VoWiFi by then.

VoLTE and VoWiFi?

Melon and Standard Bank mobile both have working VoLTE and VoWiFi on MTN. I purchased sim cards from them to test. As both are MTN MVNO's like Afrihost.

We now have zero 3G in the area and calls struggle to complete while attempting to drop down to 2G.

This is the last remaining point before porting over my primary number.

I really need access to VoWiFi when traveling abroad in order to avoid hefty roaming fees

Hi.
Unfortunately, there are still no updates at this stage. I have followed up with our Airmobile team again, and they have confirmed there is no new information on our side regarding VoLTE and VoWiFi enablement.

Guess the overlords have to control smaller players from growing too big...
