Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE-A Thread

They do specify and I take responsibility for not inspecting the list. That is my point here: "Put it into my B315 router (Yes I know, I will get to that part later). " I just assumed my routers would be compatible, which they are. Just not "APPROVED".

Your routers are not LTE category 6 capable, that is the issue, and thus not approved.

ACTIVATED!!!!

So what has been said about a separate network seems to be technically correct. The CELL_ID: seems to be different than the one that your normal MTN sim card connects to.

@cavedog any way you can tell what LTE band you are connected to with a B618?

How long does it take from ordering the Pure LTE SIM from Afrihost until delivery?

But possibly the same tower.. which is all that matters.

Many thanks @MirageF1 I hope that it works out well for you!

In the meantime I am going to wait to see if there are any Black Friday/Cyber Monday data deals of interest before placing my order.

So speeds are about 30 down and 14 up. The CA is very responsive to download. Only kicks in when doing a speedtest or download. Most of the time sitting on 4G.

International uses liquidtelecom.net for backhaul.

I received my new MTN package at work today. Ran back home to have everything setup. So because I didn't know what to do with the old router (B315) I decided to connect the two using the RJ45 that came in the package. Naturally, I expected two WiFi networks, the B525 one and the B315 one. Which is what I got and both work, I can connect to the B525 or B315 and watch a Netflix video or two without much trouble. Except, there's a third network. Idk what it is, what the password is or what it even means. May anyone explain further?

Edit - The "HUAWEI-B525-5G-48D9" is the third one

Your B525 likely has both 2.4ghz and 5ghz wifi bands

Right! So how do I obtain the password for the 5ghz band? I entered the password which was sent to me by Afrihost but it says it is incorrect.
Use default. Afrihost probably only updated your custom password on the 2.4Ghz side.

Use the default on the back SSID Key/Password.

So now it is showing 496642 so it seems as though it is using exactly the same sector antenna as normal LTE. I believe the claims of a seperate network only mean the network traffic is sent via afrihost network and not MTN once it hits MTN's servers. So a congested tower will impact both fixed and mobile.

Then you or others whose job it is should advise *** and all his support colleagues to give your clients accurate and correct information .. he even went away and asked his supervisor to confirm this before he came back to assure me.

Will definitely mention this.

@AfriMan support called. "Please wait 24 hours for it to be activated." Can someone else on the support team please look into it as that just feels like a canned response. 4 hours or 24 hours?

24 hours seems a lot, but it really depends on how quickly we can get confirmation of delivery and assign the MSISDN. I would say 4 hours is about average.

This whole business of blocking unapproved routers is completely unacceptable. It makes no difference to MTN's network what router you choose to use. If you, as a paying customer, choose to have an "inferior" experience using a sub-optimal router then that is your business. I would understand if your choice of router affected the performance of their network, or affected other users, but it does not.

I don't think it's so much about blocking routers as routers that work with the way that the network is setup. They've designed the network for maximum performance with Cat 6 for above (this link says it better). Ultimately, they want to make sure that clients have the right experience.
