Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE-A Thread

damn, that really sucks to hear :/
I just checked my rollover and the 80GB on my end for night time is still in tact. Hoping you get sorted properly!
80GB broken down into what exactly?
You posted after midnight, what time did you check?

My total available is now correct, 120+120, but that's not the point I was making yesterday about losing) disappearing data on last day of month.

Ah, yeah you're right, I'm a bit confused why your rollover happened earlier and exactly what kind of data disappeared, so I don't have the full context. Apologies about the misunderstanding

No sweat, I seldom use all my roll over data anyway by month end, I'm by no means a heavy streamer or downloader, but again, the issue is to remove it is unacceptable and many others no doubt will eat into their next month's rollover data prematurely.

Weird question if anyone knows but can i use my LTE router as a Wifi extender for the Fibre Router?

Also whats the default modem password for the HUAWEI WiFi WS5200

If you got the WS5200 from us and it was pre configured the password is your cellphone number.

I just paid for the Afrihost Pure LTE fixed MTN package and the router was delivered yesterday.

Big disappointment. The router, a MF286C is not what is shown on their site. They show the MF286A which has a battery. Okay, so no battery. Robbed.

Then, their spec document for said router on their site is wrong: "two antennas included for extra range". No, none in the box. Their agent confirmed it is an error on their site and they do not have any antennas. Okay, so no antenna. Robbed again.

Looking on their site, it is full of contradicting information as to what the actual spec is. Support was not that knowledgeable at all.

Lastly, can they not see according to the location supplied: Bashewa AH (close to Bapsfontein past OR Tambo airport), that I am in a remote area and hence the need for an external antenna? I am moving to this area on Saturday and will test the LTE. Maybe I'm being too paranoid?

My question to the forum is: the nearest MTN towers appear to be on the other side of the highway which must be 30km away. Is this possible? What are my options if the router performs poorly? I'm assuming a high gain external antenna of some sort? I looked at Otto wireless in Randburg. Have used them before.

Please, if there are any members in that area that can comment on the situation (MTN fixed LTE performance), I would be grateful. I need to be able to work from home as I'm a SysAd. VPN (openfortivpn) and SSH will suffice for most of my work along with plenty of browsing for work related information and research. Microsoft Teams for meetings. Large downloads like YouTube playlists and Linux distros etc. can be collected at the office every two weeks. I'm more concerned about low latency DNS and SSH traffic along with reliability.

Thank you.

My apologies, I never did my homework. I blindly followed the AfriHost website recommendation of MTN. Using Cellmapper, I see the closest MTN tower is about 35km away. But wait, Cellmapper shows the closest Telkom tower as a few hundred metres away! I'm bewildered. Why would AfriHost recommend MTN over Telkom? Where is my ignorance in all of this?? Maybe the MTN tower has more bands, fibre backhaul etc? Can someone please enlighten me to the inner intricacies of fixed LTE? Thank you.

Sorry for the experience you have had with Afrihost.

I have taken screenshots of the router and what we include in the box. I'm sorry you missed out on these details when buying the LTE Router from us.

I never missed the details. Screenshot shows "two antennas...". Confirmed an error from Afrihost support. False advertising.

I see that is from the pdf file. I will ask our branding team to fix that asap. Really sorry for the confusion caused.

Screenshots show the MF286C with battery compartment and the 2nd footnote states:

"2 Download speed and Battery Life are dependent on a variety of factors such as number of devices connected and signal strength. Your connection speed will also be determined by the maximum speed supported on the network you’re using."

Now, one has no legal recourse because of E&OE and "images are for illustrative purposes only and may differ slightly". I would say battery model vs no battery model is more than a "slight difference". Would you? As I said, website full of contradictory information...

That is correct sir. Please have them fix that so people don't succumb to more of the same. Thank you. That been said, please ask them to fix their site: the images are for the MF286A (with battery), NOT for the MF286C (no battery).

Seems like a lot of contradictory info on their website that needs to be fixed and blaming customers for their inconsistencies. 2 months ago I used the migrate function on Client Portal to get a bigger LTE package and was only told a month later after I had been double charged that I need to cancel the old package myself because it was with Rain while new package is with MTN - why have a migrate option then? Queried this finance department who said they'll issue me with a credit...still nothing to date. Hoping for some Black Friday LTE deals directly from MTN so I can cancel Afrihost.

It is a pity, I thought Afrihost was really good. Their support never got back to me as promised to escalate to the warehouse. That's what I thought.

@AfriNatic: please ask the webdev team to also fix the broken Ticket and Support History in the ClientZone. I submitted a ticket and after clicking "Submit", nothing appeared to happen. So I clicked again and again once more. The tickets were created with no feedback whatsoever and we now had three of the same ticket. Also, there is no support history for said tickets. I only see support history for the very last ticket I opened.

Right, as with most ISPs, the first tier support try to help, they really do but are mostly clueless as pointed out by several other members on this forum. Poor first tier support and upon asking several times to speak to a senior engineer, no joy. I could not get any answers WRT tower location, signal strength etc.

So, that being said, I must also sympathise with the support staff and the ISP itself. I do. I'm not happy with the service but I do sympathise with the staff. I worked for an ISP in 2005: DataPro, now Vox. I was a SysAd. Manning the helpdesk is awful, it's a thankless job and clients hurl abuse at the agents 24/7/365. I also worked in a call centre and can understand the need to close tickets ASAP to maintain SLAs.

It's a no win situation.

I went out to Bashewa AH today to test. Surprise surprise. I was expecting the SIM to not be activated which is always the case. The router booted and got LTE signal.

Downloaded a KNOPPIX ISO from ftp.is.co.za: 91Mbps.

Ping 196.25.1.1 with an average response time of 40ms.

Can't complain about that with no external antenna. Forgot to do a Speedtest.

As I indicated in my above post: I'm ignorant of these things and didn't know what to expect. I would be very interested to see the Telkom LTE speeds. Maybe, I will test that too at a later stage.

Besides the poor support and falsely advertised router (I'm assuming Afrihost will not do anything about), I salute them and MTN!

If MTN says you have coverage for fixed LTE, then you do indeed have coverage for fixed LTE.

I apologise for my outward frustration in the matter.

Thank you.

My sim has been locked because I used a different router. Is there a way to unblock it on my own rather than buy another router?

I did get it unblocked but the network provider said the model must be exactly the same as the one they referred me to buy. Even though the one I have works perfectly well. I am thinking of canceling the service

Unfortunately the MTN Fixed LTE service can only be used with the following four routers: Huawei B525, B612, B618 and ZTE MF286. MTN will lock the SIM if they detect usage on an unauthorised device. If you are unhappy with the policy you will have to contact MTN directly as the ISPs have to adhere to the conditions which have been attached by MTN.

Have you tried looking for a secondhand router of one of the four types mentioned above? You should be able to find one for less than R1000 in the MyBB Classifieds, OLX, Gumtree, Carbonite etc.
